Hi all -

purchased a used 2002 182 BR 4.3 l carb (190 hp) this year. Mint condition, 80 hrs - now has 86 hrs :)

runs perfect - but some trouble pulling the teenagers out on skis. Has stock prop 14x23 alum. Great top end speed (too much if you ask family!)

Was out yesterday with 5 in boat plus some gear, 3/4 tank - somewhat windy and at WOT had 4250 rpms. I would guess in calm conditions with lighter load - would be right in the 4600 range - but I've not verified that.

Based on web research - am thinking of getting another prop - something like a 4 blade 14x20 or 14x21. Dont have deep pockets so considering something like:

Any general thoughts - think going to the 20p is too much?? Are these props hard to swap out?

Thanks in advance

Doug

That prop seems like a pretty good deal. I'm guessing redline on the 4.3 is around 5000 RPM. I have always heard the rule of thumb is to add 100 RPM for every inch decrease in prop pitch, so you should be fine. Of course you'll lose some top end (but you already knew that) and you'll probably see a slight decrease in fuel economy if you do a lot of cruising. Overall, I think your reasons for re-propping is good. Also, with that power you engine is putting out, you won't really notice any difference with a SS prop. Aluminum will be much easier and cheaper to repair as well.
Don't forget about Smart Tabs as well. They will also improve your overall ride.
Removing a prop is a 5 minute deal with a prop wrench and block of wood. Don't forget to lube the splines when you do the exchange.
Good luck!
