Anyone boat here?

Looking to possibly move to PA but need to be near water!

Looking in the York area for property.

Cap'n

I live in Lancaster (about 15 miles east of York) and can tell you first hand that while there IS boating in the Susqehanna River, you really need to get yourself to the Chesapeake Bay. By the time you get to the Long Level area of Wrightsville, PA and deal with back ups at the ramp, you could easily be in the water navigating and experiencing some great locations. A 45 - 60 minute drive will put you in a number of great locations to launch or keep your boat.

Give a shout if you're in the York area - I'll be glad to point out some easy points of access to the bay from PA.

Good luck.

The Susquehana in southern PA is almost a mile wide and 6 inches deep. There are times in August that I can walk across the river from New Cumberland to Steelton and not get my knees wet! There are pools at a couple of dams but from York to my marina on the bay is less than 45 minutes. There are others closer, time wise. Why mess with the river when the bay is so near?

OK, we are also looking into northern VA also. I perfer, wait a minute (the wife) would like lake boating. I would love the bay...

Travel time the same from northern VA? How about good lakes for boating in PA, or VA...

Thanks for the info!

Northern VA can be a big area - If you're speaking about anything within say 50 miles of Wash, DC, expect housing cost to be around 200% of York. I'm a former CT native and I know your area - you will experience a tremendous housing upgrade (assuming people are buying in CT) flipping your CT property for one in York county.

Tell the Admiral that lakes aren't a real option. Aside from cruising the clear waters of the Caribbean, I can think of no greater place to boat than the Chesapeake!

Most people dont know just how large the bay is. From Port Deposit at the northern end, to south of Richmond, there is more coastline to explore than the coastline of California. Three major rivers feed it the Susquehana; the Potomac and the James. You can reach Washington,DC, Baltimore, Annapolis,Norfolk Richmond,Jamestown,Williamsburg and so much more. After being a river boater (Ohio) can you tell we love the bay?

I went to school in York, I can't really think of anyplace especialy close to go boating, nor would I ever recommend someone move there. Plus the place stinks, literally. With all the factories and the papermills in and surrounding the city, the pollution there is ridiculous. When i would leave my house in the morning, the smell of the papermills would make your eyes water, and we were 15 miles away from it. The sky always seemed perpetually gray due to all the industrial pollution. The Codorus Creek looks like a river of tar, due to all the pollutants. Plus, York has one of the highest crime rates in the state per capita. Mt roomate got mugged at gunpoint. Another friend had his car stolen, One friend who delivered pizza was robbed at gunpoint, and all his money, pizzas, and car stolen. Multiple people I knew got jumped and robbed by gangs.

This message was brought to you by the York Tourism Board.

Let’s see, Southern PA and Northern VA. Have we overlooked a nice little state tucked between these two?
Everything souljad9 said about York is basically true. It is doubtful that anyone would choose to move there of their own fee will. There is one lake in PA, (Raystown) that some from the York area travel to, but it would be over a 2 hour drive. The lake is beautiful but terribly crowded on weekends.
Northern VA is not only expensive, but the traffic is always a nightmare. We have close friends near Fredericksburg that choose not to do much on the weekends due to the constant mess on route 95. There is one lake within driving distance – Lake Anna. Also getting very crowded and part of it is the cooling water for the Nuke plant. This makes for 90 degree water in October and two headed fish.

Seriously, I would consider the eastern shore of Maryland. Property values have not risen out of reach (yet) and the location may be perfect for our boating addiction. The bay is huge and has room for all of us – “come on down.â€

I've started to think about buying some property to build on when I retire. I want to stay close to "Joesey" for family and friends, but I still want to be on the water. I'm looking for low taxes and Lite traffic....Isn't everybody... MD is on my short list.....

Any areas in particular you would recommend? I'm in no hurry, as I unfortunately won't be retiring for another 8 or 9 years. But I would consider buying in a year, two or three, if the right parcel came by....

All the above can be said about certain sections of any urban area. And being an industrial town, there will certainly be by-products of the local economy. That said, there are plenty of great places to live in the surrounding area and even further south in York county. I don't think anyone is advocating a move into the inner bowels of the city.

at 40, i can only dream about retiring - BUT i can spend another 20 years researching and dreaming. and from the bit of digging i've done to this point, if i was retiring tomorrow, i'd move to delaware. extremely low property taxes, no sales tax, favorable income tax structure. and if you pick your homestead properly, you are a short drive back to NJ, to beaches (rehobeth, dewey, ocean city) AND most importantly, the sassafras river, which spills out into the beautiful chesapeake!

the person to talk to is Frank H. (Impulse III). or check out this thread from a while ago...

Sorry, didn't mean York as an exact location. I'm open to anywhere in southern PA. Lancaster is a very strong possibility.

What are you guys paying for slips in the Bay...

Take a look at Southern Chester County. Still affordable (some parts) , still rural, and only an hour to the Chesapeake (Sassafras River). North East River and Bohemia are even closer but have skinny water and have limited facilities. Feel free to email me off line if you want to chat about the area.

Dom,
We are in the same boat - regarding retirement time. We have made a few trips over the winter looking at property on MD's eastern bay shore. Anything near St. Michaels is cost prohibitive for us but other areas such as Oxford, Cambridge and Kent Island are very nice and more affordable. You may want to look at the Chestertown area as this is a very nice town, closer to NJ but lacking in marinas. Also the run to the bay from there is about 22 miles. One of the members here would think I was terribly remiss if no mention was given to Rock Hall as well – also a much more reasonably priced area.
Not sure what area we like but we are definitely not “condo†people and would prefer some land with perhaps a small “fixer upperâ€.

Although I am closer to 20 years from retirement (yikes!), I tend to agree that the Maryland Eastern Shore is the way to go. With a power boat, you can get just about anywhere from places like Rock Hall and St Micheals. Those areas would probably remain affordable for a few years.

Personally, I doubt Kent Island would work out. Too many condos. And the Bay Bridge marina is a pricy place.

And that area is a great area for sailing when gas gets to be $20/gallon. . .

Another alternative would be the Snow Hill and Assataeague area. . but that gets to be a heafty drive from Joisey.
