How does one become a marine surveyor? Where do they get their training from?

If you are a BoatUS member, the most recent Seaworthy magazine just had an article on surveyors. It describes the different certification processes.

Here's a link to the online area and a summary of the contents of the article.

Marine Surveyors
Finding a competent surveyor may be the last step in a boat purchase, but it could easily be the most important and should never be taken lightly. Anyone can call himself a marine surveyor; there are no licenses or exams required. One long standing joke among surveyors is that all it takes to become a “professional” is a business card, a cell phone and somebody to believe you.

I looked into 2 different Chapman courses a few years ago and eventually decided that, for various reasons, I didn't need another "job" bad enough to accept the liability that came with surveyong boats for hire. I'm not quite sure what I was expecting, but I was suprised to find that the surveyors course is expensive and requires a full time committment during the course........about $5000 worth of expensive + travel, meals and lodging in Stuart FL (which isn't the low rent district) plus about 6 weeks in classes. So, this isn't something you want to do just to "get the ticket" as some folks do with the 6 pack license.
