Guys, I'm trying to help a dock neighbor who is buying a boat down in Palm Beach. He is paying cash but wants a survey and mechanical inspection and is getting the run around when contacting people. Can someone recommend a surveyor that is fair? Here on Lanier we pay about $800-$1000 for a survey. He got quoted $3000++ just for the survey. That is a big difference. This is a 42' Regal Sport Coupe with diesels, private seller, at his own dock. What do you recommend?

I had surveys done in Stuart which is just north of Palm Beach. I used:
Stetler Marine Surveys (Brian G. Stetler); they are out of Jupiter Fl for the Hull and Systems
Diesel Surveyors Inc (Alex G. Gillespie); they are out of Riveria Beach Fl for the Engines, drives, and generator.
I would give Stetler a 7 out of 10 grade and Diesel Surveyors an 8 out of 10 Grade. Both acceptable.
I was all up in their business during the survey; they worked for the money.....

Thank you. Do the rates quoted sound right to you? Like I said here a survey is $800-$1000 and he got quoted $3K plus travel time. That seems crazy high.

Jeff Hahn is in the area and is stellar.

Not sure if the FL market is still as hot as it has been all summer.

Surveyors have been in high demand, I am sure rates may have escalated.

Just to echo @CaptRonn, I just used Jeff Hahn for a survey. He was professional, thorough, and reasonable at $22/ft. He was able to fit me into his hectic schedule to accommodate a quick closing.

Thanks everybody, went with Brian Stetler and my boat neighbor was very impressed, he was thorough and reasonable. Appreciate the recommendations. Dan
