So had survey yesterday - fresh water boat 475 hrs. Full Cummins survey shows some things to be rectified but nothing to kill a deal. Boat is extremely clean. Only survey item was some moisture readings in bilge area in salon - floor and horizontal devide panels that separate the compartments - specifically forward end of area that houses sump box and area forward of that. Ball hammer in this area shows good structure and sound (owner was getting angry with the hammer test!!). The most forward bilge that houses thruster is bone dry - as is rest of boat - no moisture readings at all anywhere on hull as well as all stringers throughout - surveyor used 2 meters to verify readings. Boat has factory spare props (2 mounts each with 4 screws) mounted directly below water manifold, and owner added a after market water filter right next to manifold). Surveyor is "not at all worried" and feels most likely scenario is water leaked at some point, and penetrated through screw holes for spare prop posts. We removed one post and it appears 3 of the 4 screws had no sealant applied at factory, nor was any sealant applied at base of mounts. This area was otherwise spotless with no signs of water and zero delamination anywhere. His recommendation is to pull up both mounts (and sump box while in there), re- seal everything and then reinstall components. He then advised I could cut a few holes in winter to let her dry and then reseal all next spring to ensure she drys out if I choose. I checked shower drain and forward a/c lines and saw no evidence of any current or prior leaks. Does anyone have other thoughts on likely scenarios that could cause this one area to have moisture (i.e. - water coming from above - windshield, bow or rub rails, where water could have then gotten to low center), and with rest of boat bone dry, would this cause concern? Thanks in advance to all. Russ.

Shinsr I cannot answer your question about the possible water intrusion but if your surveyor has done a thorough inspection and reports what his findings are without issue and everything else checks out fine you should be good to go.

Did you close on it yet? I was wondering when you would be traveling down the Hudson, I am located on the Hudson near Newburgh and thought maybe I could catch you on your trip down.

I wish you all the best with your new 48 DA. We closed on ours last Oct and only had 5 days on her before it was hauled for the season, needless to say we are very excited to get her in the water to start the season.

JB - thanks and congrats on your boat - sure you cannot wait to launch! I am still waiting for final survey report and a update on the above issue. Hoping to button everything up in a few days and then close within a week. My goal if all goes well is to run her home starting Thursday 5/13, get to schulyerville end of day one then to around haverstraw day two - then home port eastern LI day 3. Would love to take a more liesurely trip but getting me and my friends (crew!) away from business and families is a major undertaking for 3+ days as it is! Have you travelled the canal or the Hudson north of where you are? Not sure where Newburgh is in relation to my day 2 run, but if convenient for a pit stop than maybe.

Moisture meters don't impress me at all!! I would trust a hammer any day over one. My last two survey's I told them to leave it at home and bring their hammer and eat wheaties (kinda joking). I just don't trust meters the way most are used

Let me know when your underway on your trip South and once you hit the Kingston area I will reach out and keep an eye open for you. Where I am located is a good fuel stop (West Shore Marine) right on the river 18 miles below the Kingston lighthouse. We have 2 48 DA's at our marina.

Sounds great, thanks - hope to have everything buttoned up by tomorrow to set close date. Keep you posted.

I would not be worried. That is your keel and the thickest, toughest part of the boat. It's not like you're looking at a 50 year old boat. If the water didn't come in from outside from a collision, then you are fine. That compartment is notorious on the 48DA for an overflowing sump. In addition, you have the aftermarket filter, which can be a source of leaks.

Thanks for input - that's what I concluded. Set for Tuesday close and Thursday departure back to Long Island.

Good evening all - couldn't update over trip - under the premise all well that ends well, she is home in her new slip! 31 hours of running time from Malletts Bay VT to peconic bay Long Island. Lock system was very cool and lake Champlain is beautiful. However the lock system is a slow go, and the scenery loses its magic after a few of the 10 hours it takes to complete. Locks themselves are quite simple, much simpler than those in the Shinnecock canal for those familiar. The Hudson River was a complete mess. Debris from south of Albany right through Havestraw - it was like playing the longest game of frogger ever. Did this leg of the trip through dense fog, light to pouring rain for 7 hours. Unfortunately hit something submerged right off of West Point. Boat had a vibration afterwards. A HUGE thank you to Mike and the team at Pennybridge marine - at 5pm on Friday night they hauled me, swapped out the spare props and had me up and running by 5:30. All that and very fair with the price - cannot say enough good things about them. If I had not had spare props I would have likely had to leave the boat there for a week - I never carried spare props before this, but will now never travel far from home waters without them. Woke up this morning to dense fog that didn't lift until 9:30am. Hudson south of Havestraw was fine, and tappan zee bridge work was a non issue. Real nice running by laguardia and Whitestone and throgs neck bridges too. Sound was great today and really made up time there. Boat ran flawlessly, could not be happier w my choice. A final thank you to my friend Mike (rocket on csr) for taking days away from his family and business to do the trip with me. Could not have done it without him.

Shinsr,

Congratulations on your new boat and glad to hear for the most part your trip went well. Did you run through the Harlem River or go around Manhattan? How much fuel did you burn on your trip? I hope to make the trip up to Lake Champlain next year this year we will be running out to Block Island.

Feel free to reach out anytime with questions or just to exchange ideas regarding your 48. I have learned a whole lot in a short period of time of ownership and also from a lot of good people on this forum. Although you are way more experienced at this coming from a 44DA than I was when I purchased the 48DA, I came from owning high performance boats for 30 years.

Have a great enjoyable summer.
JB

Thanks JB - took Harlem river into the sound - really an easy way to go. Total fuel burn over the three days was 485 gallons - very economical considering was at 26 knots for last 4.5 hours of trip racing against incoming weather. Great summer to you. Russ.
