SUP Board transportation?

For those that take a SUP board with you abroad, what have you found to be the best way of transporting it? I was wanting to lay it down the nose of the boat while in transit but was unsure how the best way to strap it down was.

Thanks!

We just bought a kayak and a SUP. I'm not sure what I'm going to do, but I'm leaning towards putting the SUP on the bow pad, the kayak over the SUP then ratchet strapping them to the rails that run alongside the pad.

We have a pair of large 11ft SUPs and use something like these bracket in stainless. We got ours at the boat show from a local fabricator but they are the same, they also swing out so are good for the kayaks as well.

We tend to use the sup more from our marina so rarely use them but when we do they area great.

Just bought a SUP and we plan on storing it one of two ways depending on our boating for the day.

flat on the bow cushion with line running around the rails to hold it down and a second line running from the middle over the front of the SUP to the Bow cleat.

or

on the starboard side walk way since I don't normally walk on that side to the bow. (normally use the port walk way) and tide it on its side to the bow rail.

A lot of folks in our area carry Sups on their boats. I think the magma holders SOV posted are the best ones out there.

I like the Magma as well. We have 4 kayaks currently, 2 adults and 2 kids. We only carry the kids as the adult yaks take up just too much space. That is why I was looking at SUP boards, I can stack them on the bow and not kill my vision. Or look like the Clampetts coming down river. I can fit the kids easily up each side along the gunnel and knee rail.

Does anyone find the Magma racks to be an issue due to 30 lbs hanging on your rail while underway? I'm looking for a solution as well and am considering Suprax but the Magna racks are intriguing.

Our boards are 45lbs each - not noticeable on the 320, the only issue is when on plane if you bounce of a wave, the thud is awful - I use some harbor freight rubber tie down bands with hooks to keep them down and that helps a lot.

Consider an inflatable SUP. Super light and when inflated, you really can't tell it is not a solid board. I got my 10 footer on amazon for about $500. It takes about 10 mins to inflate, comes with paddle and pump and stows away nicely in a duffle.

I've got two inflatables and they are nice but the effort to inflate and deflate is a bit of work.

I'm toying with the idea of putting my solid boat above on the radar arch strapped back to to the even of the bimini cover. It's only 45 lbs so statically it should be find but I'm nervous about how it will behave in larger bumps.

Has anyone seen something like what I'm describing. Sup's on a roof rack style setup above the arch?

I have the Magma rail rack for a SUP and I just tie a Lilypad off the side as well. For me to much stuff on the arch (radar GPS antennas etc).

I have an inflatable but also bought a 120$ Inflate/deflate pump. Plug it in, and it brings the pressure to 14psi in less than 10 (maybe 5 minutes) and we are good to go. Still, pretty large bag, hard to store.

I lay my inflatable board down between the sunpad and the rail. Strap across the board from the bow rails to the sunpad rails and it stays put. I wouldn’t travel this way with a fiberglass board. Too likely to damage the boats gelcoat.

I’m in a Sundancer so they must lay flat. If they are standing on the side it takes away too much vision.

This is the best picture I have. It’s sitting on two solid noodle pieces to keep it above the stateroom hatch. Only downside over the years is I didn’t keep it in a bag so the clearcoat on the bottom dried up and mostly flaked off in the sun. I’ll clean that up and spray on some new clear as a winter project.

So I tried my roof rack approach today to see how it would fit and if it would be worth adding gromits to the arch so I can secure the board. It seemed to fit like a glove and I'm really tempted to install two loops on the arch so I can easily strap my board down there. Here's some photos.

What am I missing. Why aren't others doing this. Is there something that could go wrong? My intent at this point is not out in the ocean but in the delta this seems like it would be fine.

I suspect that if you called searay and asked them about this they would say it can’t support the forces of the wind blowing on it.

but I would expect there is equally as much force from your Bimini top.

For what it is worth I've been using this now for 2 months and am very happy so far.
