Sundeck upgrade, any insight?

I'm contemplating trading up my 2005 240 Sundeck to a new 280 Sundeck. I love my 240 but only wish it had more power. I also feel that the 240 is too small to venture off to Catalina from the coast. There seems to be some really good deals on 280s out there right now as well (although I can't figure out what the Sea Ray incentive amount is). I'm looking at one now that has the 425HP engine upgrade - really has my juices flowing. Does anyone have some practical insight?

Thanks!

I would not expect a 280SD to run much better than your 240SD even with a big block. It weighs 5726 pounds versus 4680 pounds for your 240SD so that big block has to push more weight.

I imagine your 240SD will top out around 50 and I doubt the 280SD will do much better. The boat may be a bit more sea worthy because of it's size but beyond that I so not see much of a difference in the open waters in terms of safety. Why not move up to a Cruiser? Used 260DAs and 280DAs can probably be had for the same price as a new 280SD.

You may also want to look at the 280SS or 290SS

i upgraded my 2004 240 for a 2009 290 Sundeck.

The new boat is a lot more substantial and does an easy 50 mph w/ the 496. While both boats bows sit low in the water the 290 clearly can manage big water better than the 240.

we have been out in rough seas that would have really knocked us around in the 240. the 290 manages w/ out major banging around. We can typically get up on 2 or 3 waves which provides a very smooth ride.

Great upgrade for us. Good luck.

Thanks for the insight. I'm really tempted by the deal in front of me. Almost too good to be true. For my '05 240 I can top it out around 42 MPH but I really think the boat is just much heavier than the quoted dry weight, probably because of how I typically load it. I'm told the 280 with the 425HP motor will top 55MPH. Decisions decisions....

This one I'm looking at has a $124K sticker, they are selling for $85K. Been on their lot since Feb.

umm... well if speed is the consideration.. I'm sure you were told the '05 would do 50 mph. Now after putting 1000 to 1500 lbs of fuel, water, gear, passengers on board neither is going to hit the top end.

As Dave said, I would consider the move up to a cruiser for that kind of money. It looks like that is about the typical discount quote too. About the same percentage off I got on my 240 back in '06.

Wow, so 30%+ discount to list is the norm? If so, my budget just went up!!!

There was a thread here a while back on just this topic. You might want to do a search. I haven't priced a new boat since my '06.. but I would think the discounts might be even more now on a held boat.

Considering that I got a 29% discount in April of 2008 (right before the boat market crashed), I would expect more than 30% on a floor planned boat. Your results may vary.
