Hello everyone,

My wife and I are looking to move on from our 02 Sea Ray 230 signature bowrider. It's a awesome boat with the bravo 3 drive, and 5.7L engine. The only draw back for us is the layout. With our 2 kids and other passengers the only way on and off the boat is stepping on the cushions. Only way in and out of the water and back in the boat is stepping on the cushions. Even though they are in good shape we would like to sell this boat and get a Sundeck. Somewhere around 2004-2007. We like the SD because of the easy foot path rear entry and also the bow foot path entry. And the sinks are a perk also. Right now our 230 has all rear seating with the large cushion above the engine compartment to lay out on. The sundecks don't have that and only have the seating. That should give us more room inside the boat. My questions are:
1) Is the main rear area and the bow area the same size in the 220 and 240? I'm thinking the only difference is the narrow foot path length where the bow window is to the front and back of the boat is shorter in the 220 and longer in the 240. Am I wrong? If the area in the boat is the same and the walkway foot path is the only difference I'll go with the 220.
2) Does the bow ladder allow access in and out of the water or only serve purpose when beached up on land?

Thank you very much for your time!
Corey

Here is a good pic of what I'm trying to explain. Are the green parts I circled the same size in the 220 and 240? I'm thinking the only difference is the red highlighted foot path is longer in the 240. Make sense?

The 240 is just about 3’ longer overall. I think you’ll see that the bow seating is much longer as well as the rear cockpit area. The extra length is added through out the boat.

I have a 220, the inside of the 240 is about 2’ longer with an extra foot up front and 1’ in the rear bench. The third foot is on the swim deck, the 220 swim deck is rectangular while the 240 is a half circle. They are probably equivalent in square feet if you do the math.

the front ladder is for getting on and off at the beach. It doesn’t hang low enough to get out of the water.

We really like the 220 layout. It’s a little snug, but we always end up with 6 up front and usually 3-4 in the back. The 220 has a capacity of 10, 12 for the 240.

We went with the 220 because it fits better on smaller lakes, if you are on the ocean or bigger water I would go with the 240

Corey, the difference in usable space between the two boats is actually quite a lot. More than the actual dimensions would lead you to believe - but as noted, it's 3' not 2' as one might think. The 240 of that era is NOTICEABLY bigger - both in the cockpit and the bow. Storage galore - it even has TWO floor storage areas. The one in the cockpit is cavernous, as is the storage under the port-side seat. There's a reason this boat was one of Sea Ray's best selling of all time. And, as mentioned, the bow ladder is only for beach boarding. AND... while bigger never hurts... the boat performs great with just the 350MAG!

You don't say where you boat, and it can make a difference. The 220 tows easy, as it is smaller and lighter weight. The 240 is a MUCH bigger boat. Mine weighs in at over 6000 on the trailer with skis, tubes, and ice chests on board. But it seats 12, handles rough water on a busy lake, and does water sports with ease. You really need to physically look at both to see the difference. We started out looking at a 220, but once we got on the 240, we never looked back.

There are a few 240's with the 5.0 out there. Wait for one with the 5.7/350 mag and the Bravo 3. you will not be sorry. The 240 even has a larger fuel tank, 65 gallons vs 50. yes it costs more to fill, but you go further before you have to find a marina.
