Hey. Does anyone know if the side plastic covers that hide the air vents on the 240 are bolted or glued in? I want to take them off to redo the sealant but need to know how they're fitted.

I honestly don't know which way they are attached. However, you may be able to look up there from the engine bay. They're pretty thin, so I would guess just siliconed in. But that's just an uneducated guess!:smt001

But... may I suggest not going through all that hassle? Instead, carefully cut the bad silicone out with a new razor blade (you do this by making a "V" pattern). Then just reapply your new silicone.

There's no reason to take out the silicone that's in good shape (which most of it should be). You'd just be making more work for yourself.

You might even find you can simply go over what is already there - depending on the gap size. I mean, the silicone really shouldn't be in bad shape - maybe just not enough silicone?

I believe they use several plastic one-way push-on fasteners that are embedded into the cover. You may be able to carefully pry the cover off but run the risk of breaking it or dinging up your gel-coat. Probably best to reseal as mentioned above.

This site may have replacements if you break one.

BTW, on my 270 the holes did not go all the way through the hull so nothing to be seen from the inside of the hull. I only know because mine got knocked off by someone going past a floating dock marina at a speed producing maximum wake in a no wake zone, my boat rocked so far over the cover hit the dock and knocked it off. Was wishing I had an RPG at the time.

In thinking I believe I got new fasteners from SR to insert in the cover and reinstalled it back on the hull with the new fasteners and some silicone.

they are just glued /siliconed in. mine started coming off last year and i just used 4200 to put them back.if you look you can see a block thhat stiffens the vent above the intake. make sure to if that has come undone and glue it back too.
hope this helps,eddie

I had to order new ones for our 240DA. They both cracked because the adhesive SeaRay used was much to rigid and did not allow for thermal movement during the winter. Mine cracked during the winter while the boat was on the lift.

I'm not sure what they used for adhesive, but it is very hard and quite difficult to remove. I don't think you'll get them off without destroying the covers. That is, if your are bonded with the same stuff as mine.

I went back with 3M4200 (much more flexible); no problems so far. By the way SeaRay provided me new ones for only $100 total. They list for over $300 EACH!

Good luck.

I'm gonna ask them to provide some new ones I think. The design is quite bad! I don't understand why they use such thin plastic in that location!

I think the real issue is with the adhesive they used. It is just way to rigid and not nearly flexible enough. Because of this, very high stresses are induced into the covers during temperature extremes (especially cold) where the cover wants to contract but the adhesive prevents it. When this happens you get cracking along the bonded edge (on the top) of the cover.
