Anybody have any experience with these? Looks like a perfect solution quick shade or sun option. I see they are offered on the new 51. No idea about the cost of these. Looks like a perfect solution to a permanent metal framed shade cover option.

I looked into it for my boat. Ill have to see if I still have the email with some prices, but essentially it wouldn't work on my arch because of the weight.

Mike -

I have a SureShade automated system on my 410 Sundancer and it has been GREAT. With our forward arch the whole cockpit was pretty much exposed to the sun and now the shade goes all the way to the stern seating. We have had it for 3 seasons already and it has performed flawlessly. Can't tell you how many people have stopped us to ask about it... and I am sure now that they are offering SureShade as a factory option on the 510 Sundancer it will quickly become the new standard for canvas upgrades on Sea Ray boats.

My 410 Sundancer is featured on their Sea Ray page: http://sureshade.com/sea-ray-boats (we were the 1st Sea Ray boat to have a SureShade!)

Full disclosure - In addition to being a happy customer I also do marketing for SureShade so I have the inside scoope on how things are done. They suggest their manual shade on boats under 35 feet. It works the same way to extend/retract the shade without support poles in the back, but it operates with a hand crank instead of electrically. Installation is easier (boaters can even install themselves) and it is cheaper. They give custom quotes based on your boat type, size, etc. You can see an example of a manual shade installed on a 250 SLX on the Sea Ray page.

Good luck!

I'm guessing I could go Elect or Manual on my 2005 390DA with hardtop. What's the price point of either in Captains Blue?

You might want to check pricing before getting your heart set on a SureShade............it is a $12,500 option on the 510DA. You could put 3 or 4 aft enclosures with side curtains on most boats for that.

I met them at the Ft Lauderdale boat show. Non actuated manual version was about 5k for material only, not installed. I just couldnt get the system to work with my hardtop. I did see it in person on the 510 and it is slick. The beauty when installed from factory and designed with the hardtop is that it is concealed. Not easy to retrofit on the older models. Met the owner and they are extremely nice people.

Thanks for the ballparks guys. I was thinking it was about a 5K option. Certainly not worth it on my 15 year old boat. I can get a permanent cantilevered shade from my local canvas guy for about 2K. I am not a fan of the down rods that support typical canvas tops. he have me a drawing that looked like a ball cap bill. Slick, but permanent install.
I really like the quick option of shade/ no shade, but not at this level of cost. Might look goofy as a retrofit as well.

Shade is your friend! It's also nice to be able to enclose the cockpit. I wouldn't trade my full canvas with screens for summer and Strataglass for cooler weather for a simple shade cover.

Understand Ken. your boating needs are probably a little different than mine. I have no need for screens or glass aft for our area and the way we boat. Just looking to block those direct cancer causing sun rays from above. Maybe a big Hillbilly golfing umbrella! Or one of those flimsy Taylor Made tents.

Hey guys - couple of comments / things to clear up:

- Full enclosures are definitely possible with the retractable shade... we have a full enclosure on our 410 Sundancer and the automated shade. You just have to take the enclosure pieces off before retracting the shade. (you can see pictures on their Sea Ray page - http://www.sureshade.com/sea-ray-boats

- Shade is your friend!! The extra shade is essential for us with two kids with fair skin. We can even cruise with our shade extended. But what we also love is that we can retract the shade very easily when we want to sit back and check out the stars at night (love that!) or get a better view of 4th of July fireworks and things like that. It really is nice to have the option.

- COST - the manual shade actually costs about $3,000 and you can install it yourself. The automated shade starts at $5,000 plus cost of installation. The option for the new 510 Sundancer costs more through Sea Ray because it is a factory installation and very custom.

Finally, I am really glad we made the investment in our boat... it adds value for us now and should add to our resale value later. We have a 2002 (now 11 yrs old) and I feel like the shade will be a nice differentiator on the market when it comes time to upgrade to our next boat.

here's a picture showing our boat with the automated shade - with and without the aft enclosure on:

$3000 sounds more inline with what I am thinking. Can you explain the install process? Time required, etc. I am assuming that this fits under your rear bimini top and appears to follow the curve as well. When retracted, is it possible to install the aft curtain for winter storage? Or can you leave it extended and then install aft curtain?

I am also assuming that these are built to your specific boat model, or are there standard sizes?

Are there any installation diagrams online to look at?

Mike - a lot of these questions could be best answered by Dana at SureShade... give her a call - she's really good about walking you through the whole process.

I can tell you that if you go with the manual shade the install process is very straightforward - they have specialized mounting brackets that come with the shade and give instructions for installs. Most of the manual shade customers do their own install. Our install required wiring because it is automated, so it was a bit more involved. Right now they are built to your specific boat model/size... so you specify the width and extension length.

For my shade it attaches to the "brow" so that the canvas is seamless from the rest of the canvas when extended... and they use a curved roller (part of their patented design). If you have your original aft curtain you might be able to still use that during winter storage, but not 100% sure. We just retract our shade and shrink wrap.

I'd wonder about how you keep these things clean.

Sounds like someone should investigate sponsoring the site.
