I boat on a river and would like a chart plotter to help with night navigation and to mark some safe points in a few trouble areas. I would to find one that is intuitive any suggestions or is that too small of a price point?

We have a ray marine A57. Not sure if they still make it but we got it at the boat show last feb and w all the discounts and rebates it was around $500. Works great and takes the AIS feed from our VHF.

IMO, what I've seen out of the 3-6 year old Lowrance plotters are not very intuitive. I'm really happy with the Garmin 545s I bought from Jim (BOEMARINE.com owner of the site) a few years ago. I couldn't be happier. Paired with the Standard Horizon VHF (also from BOE) that when connected to the Garmin has the "buddy feature" and it's really nice.
Either way I'll buy another Garmin and Standard Horizon when the time comes. Best of luck either way.

I had the Garmin 440S on my previous boat (that plotter has been replaced with the 441S), it was a good little device, I'd be very comfortable recommending it to others. I'm probably going to go into the 700 series for the new boat, but, frankly, the 440S did everything that I needed, it was just a little too small for me.

I also had the G2 Vision chip for the 440S, I'd say "save your money". That plotter just isn't big enough to really benefit from the card (and it's EXPENSIVE). The built in charts are good enough for everything that I wanted to do.
