There was a thread posted several days ago with a picture of some yahoo with a fire burning charcoal grill on the swim platform, and as I looked at the picture I just could not believe how someone could be so stupid. So here’s an idea, let’s start a thread on “stupid stuff”! Post your stupid stuff postings here and let’s just see how big this will grow. Posts with pictures are best, but those without will work to.

Who knows maybe someone will read about something stupid they did and think about it. Maybe it could save someone from a terrible mistake!

My first one here does not have a picture; I was late getting the camera. I saw a 340 running out the marina the other day with two small children riding on the bow, feet hanging over the side. Ok, not too smart, but to top it off neither had PFD’s on. Both kids had to be under the age of ten, maybe even eight. Stupid stuff!

I see this DAILY on Candlewood Lake. It boggles my mind that a father, or responsible captain (figuratively speaking) of a boat, could let something like this happen. It's a sure recipe for disaster. Morbid disaster.

When my 5 and 7 year old are on the bow (we have a BR) seats and we are running (never over 30 MPH), the rule is before we go, "butt to feet". Their butt must touch their feet (they couldn't see out of the boat otherwise) and they must hold onto the handle or I stop the boat.

I would like them to be 6 and 8 and still enjoying the boat next year.

NO WAY... Beside being dangerous it's illegal... No PFD, Stupid. My rule, No ones on the bow while underway through the no wake zone out to the railroad bridge. Temping but no one is allowed there, too much boat traffic on a weekend through that channel.

Second once anchored or in the slip if they want to go out on the bow the PFD is on, period.

Are you sure?

I saw a couple of guys running south under the Mantoloking Bridge with what appeared to be a sea turtle tied down to the swim platform. By the time I got the camera out of its case, you can't see the swim platform because of the large wake they were leaving in the no wake zone. My wife and friends who were aboard agreed that it sure looked like a sea turtle. No idea where they "found" it or how it came to be on their swim platform.

I left the fenders over the side. After a day of boating I had one that was never seen again...

OK, OK, I can't take it any longer!! The Admiral decided to let the two grandkids sit on the bow up near the windshield with their PFD's on while I went through the no wake zone. Barely at idle. I kept telling her to take them off. She finally did when the sheriffs patrol told her to. I didn't get a ticket but that was plenty stupid. I did pass all the safety checks and I now have a life times of " I told you so's " to use on her. Still it's not worth jepardizing a childs life for.

It's off my chest but I don't feel good about it:smt021

Ah Ha you are right... The law in MD changed this year. 13 or younger need a PFD on while the boat is in motion above deck, Under 21'... So you are right not illegal... Over stated that one! Still my kids won't be up on the bow without one, but that's just me!

I take my grandkids with all the time 4 and 7yo. I don't allow them on the bow either. I actually thought you were referring to the bow riding when you made the illegal comment.

Well OldSkool; It appears that your admiral and my admiral went to the same skool.

It does NOT help being out on July 4th weekend seeing boats on full plane swamping no wake bouys with people on the bow. :smt021

There you go, this thread was meant to be about "Stupid Stuff", not a depate about riding on the bow. Let's here about some stupid stuff, CSR needs a little humor!

Where is Gary, I am sure he has some stuff to add.... good lord he could write a book, oh wait... he did!

I grabed a can a fabreeze thinking it was suntan lotion an proceeded to spray myself with it. Unfortuantly my wife and her girlfiend where watching.

That's why their the admiral! We went out on Friday and Monday and skipped Saturday and Sunday. The sheriff said that Saturday and Sunday were absolutly off the wall.

Does this qualify? Here's a link for more info:

That assuredly qualifies! Aluminum and copper 'radiator' immersed in salt water. Lets see what else? Live well pump. Single clamped below the water line. Unreinforced hose below the waterline. Wire nuts on the electric wire. With any lucky that bayliner will sink and put him out of his misery. Or maybe the standard GM automotive EFI system he installed will blow the boat up. Well at least he reinstalled the backflame arrestor. What's that they say about a little knowledge being a dangerous thing?

Wire nuts in the bilge and the bilge is already wet! The only thing missing is a sticker for the local EMT.

No bug bombs on the boat !!. :smt021

Alibuma, What in the h*ll are you doing over there lurking maybe ??.

I KNEW someone would call me out on coming across that! Lets just say I have a redneck side.

I am contemplating attempting a coaxial coil conversion and putting a window AC under my V Berth in my 250.
http://www.thehulltruth.com/boating-forum/56606-window-ac-converted-marine-use.html
I've been doing lots of research and found the coaxial coil at Packless.com and have contacted my HVAC guy about soldering it in and recharging.

As an alternative, I am contemplating putting the stock AC window unit in the bulkhead between the vberth and the anchor locker then leaving the anchor locker hatch open to vent. A 5k unit at Menards or Walmart is less than $100 and only $50 on Craigslist.
