Good Morning All,

I have a 93' 330 DA that I'd like to repack the stuffing boxes on. Ok, check that. They NEED repacked. :smt089 She's got twin big blocks and a genny. Here's the problem... I can't see how a normal sized human could possibly fit down in the ER to accomplish this. I got a quote for $2K from a mechanic to pull the engines and replace both stuffing boxes with dripless, but I'd rather just repack them myself and save the cash for about a billion other things I'd rather spend it on for the boat.

Any thoughts? Anyone successfully accomplish this and live to tell the tale?

I have a 88 340DA so my layout is different. For mine the only way to get to them to adjust let alone repack is to remove the exhaust cross collector. I then lay a piece of carpet over the engine and tranny to protect me from cuts and bruises. Then laying on the carpet with my body angled down 45 degrees I can touch the packing gland by wrapping my hands around the tranny and v drive. I last did this when I was 55. At the time I was smart enough to use GFO packing. I have only adjusted once since then. Good luck
