The car keys fell in at the dock yesterday at 5 pm while closing up the boat for the weekend. That's the $300 electronic keys, one for each car. It was about 75 degrees with water temperature about 70 degrees, an incoming tide about a quarter of the way up its usual 10 foot change, and the sun about an hour over the horizon. My slip is shaded next to a 60 foot Carver and was at 17 feet with murky water. We are thick with jelly fish. Thinking fast, I needed a anchored drop line. I though about using the anchor, but the keys were at the stern, so getting the anchor and all its chain to the stern was going to be a big project. What to use? I needed something heavy. I had two spare props in the bilge. so I grabbed one of those. It probably weighs 50#. I dropped that to the floor of the harbor using a dock line, changed into my bathing suit, grabbed a flashlight and a mask, and climbed in. The water wasn't too bad. I took a breath and started down the line. About 4 feet down, I attempted to equalize my ears and I lost my breath. Up to the surface for another try. Back down again. This time maybe 6 feet. I could not see my hand 2 feet from my face. I did see a lot of jelly fish and the color of pea soup. It was really dark. Without the line I would not know which way was up. I tried equalizing my ears again and I ran out of breath. Up I went. A third try and I realized that I must have been experiencing some kind of anxiety. I'm not afraid of the water. I'm a great swimmer and a certified and experience diver. I can swim the length of an Olympic pool underwater. But, I could not get down to the floor. I gave up and called on the radio to the marina to see if they had a magnet. They did not, but lucky for me someone at the marina with a magnet was monitoring their channel 69 and heard my call. After less than 5 minutes of fishing with the magnet, I got the keys. I immediately put them in a sink full of fresh water while I cleaned up. I then opened them, removed the batteries, flushed the inside several times with fresh water, shook them out, and put them in a zip lock bag with rice overnight.

Guess what? They work. I think I'm going to get a strong magnet to keep on the boat.

Great story and I love when there is a happy ending!

Same thing happened to me. I unscrewed a speaker from the cockpit and dangled it with a coat hanger from my boat hook that extends to 12 feet. Second attempt pulled them up. Two lessons learned. Put a floatie on your key chain. If no floatie, then make sure you have a chunk of metal that the magnet can attach to. The only thing that the magnet snagged was the ring itself. None of the other items stuck to the magnet.....

Great McGiver moments - we all like them in a weird sort of way.....

+1 on the magnet; also, a 5" treble hook is very handy to have as well...like the one the guys use on Swamp Men to catch alligators.

It's unbelievable just how resilient the new automotive "proximity" keys are. I stood in chest deep water washing the boat for at least 30 minutes and once back on the boat found that I had my car key in my bathing suit's pocket - CRAP! We boat in fresh water so I didn't rinse but just opened it up, took the battery out, blew as much of the water out as I could, and left it in the hot sun to dry. Once back to the dock I reinstalled the battery and cover and it's worked flawlessly ever since. I would have never guessed that one!! Being mostly plastic I'm not sure that a magnet would pick it up if it dropped to the bottom...

Surprisingly magnets won't scramble an electronic key.
Im grabbing one of those magnets, maybe I'll troll for random stuff in the marina.

The other side of the coin:

Mine are still on the bottom behind the boat and no attempts with the magnet are finding them. $250 at the dealer to replace the fob...

May I suggest ebay for the fobs? My father was able to get a fob for a Lincoln for roughly 1/3 of the dealer price. We are lucky enough to know one of the techs so he programmed it for a small fee. My truck I was able to program a new key without a trip to the dealer since I still had both the originals.

Totally buying a magnet for boat after reading this. Hell I may stick one in the bed of the truck too.

Anybody want a $200 pair of Ray Ban's? They're in my slip. right at my stern. About 8 feet deep, lots of muck and weeds.....

I would have gone in for that. Piece of cake.

My wife lost a pair of 500.00 prescription glasses with magnetic clip on sunglasses in about 10 feet of murky water last year. Hit the GPS to mark the spot and came back the next day with a borrowed 10lb magnet on a rope.

Didnt find the glasses but I found 25' of anchor chain connected to a real nice fortress FX11 anchor that I use now as a main anchor - would have rather found the glasses though :)
