The back area of my floor was soft and on inspection it was clear that some of the plywood supporting the floor was rotten. Therefore, I tore up the floor on my 1989 220 OV. I now have a couple of options and wondered if anyone had any thoughts.

You can see the overall layout of the floor in the picture below

The picture below was taken after the fuel tank, most of the floor and the foam has been removed. You can see that the stringer goes back under the deck adjacent to the engine.

The stringer is still somewhat solid but the foam was holding water which is why I think most of the plywood structure in that area of the floor has rotted, and the stringer is wet and soft in spots.

To replace the stringer, do I need to cut open the deck beside the engine, remove the foam and get access to the stringer or is there another way to get at this? Also, I've thought of just "gutting" the whole floor system and then replacing the stringers. Can I just cut out the section of the stringer that has rotted (the forward part is very solid) and join the two with plywood cleats? Any thoughts are appreciated. Thanks.

I read a bunch on stringer / transom replacement on the iboats forum. They have a restoration subforum where folks have talked in detail about this type of work. Looks like you have most of the hard done.

My thread on transom/stringer repair is just below yours, at this point I would pull the motor and gut the entire boat. The wood wicks the water all over the substructure. Looking at the photos you already are pretty far in and might as well go all the way, or rue it later.

Any updates, or more photos? I a'm interested because I have a 1990 220 OV that probably has the same damage and wanted to see how you were going about your project.
