i went to the boat for first time in two weeks yesterday. (we have had some bad weather and i have been very busy). my intention was just to check the boat out and turn the engines over. i started the starboard engine fine. port just clicked - battery problem. i used the emergency start rocker switch and the port engine started straight away. however, after about 30 seconds of both engines idling, i got a loud noise from inside the throttle housing. i can best describe it as like a slipping ratchet. click-click-click in quick succession (maybe 10 clicks per second). i moved the port throttle to forward, reverse etc and the noise did not change. Then I cut that engine and the noise stopped.

i connected shore power and left the charger running for 24 hours.

i went back today and the same thing happened. the port engine battery had not taken the charge. okay, i need to replace the port engine battery. but would that cause the clicking noise? or is it a coincidence that i have 2 problems at one time?

I should add that the model i have is QUICKSILVER 88688A23 DUAL HANDLE TRIM CONTROL

posted this at the weekend and i think it got overlooked. can anyone help me with this?

Let me say upfront that I'm not familiar with the inner workings of your set-up. I've never had one apart.

But... I would guess that there must be some nuts on the inside somewhere that are used to tighten the cables to the levers? Possibly one of these nuts is loose and you hear them rattling?

My Mercruiser manual says:

Remote Control is Difficult to Move, Has Excessive Play, or Makes Unusual Sounds.

..................Possible Cause...................................................................... Remedy

Insufficient lubrication on shift and throttle linkage fasteners..............Lubricate

Obstruction in shift or throttle linkage.............................................Remove obstruction

Loose or missing shift or throttle linkage..........................................Check all throttle linkage. If any are loose or missing, see
...............................................................................................authorized Mercury Mercruiser dealer immediately.

Shift or throttle cable kinked.........................................................Straighten cable or have authorized Mercury Mercruiser dealer
...............................................................................................replace cable if damaged beyond repair.
