I have a 1985 270 SeaRay w/ Twin 5.7 OMC Sterndrives. I have a shift cable problem. It will go into foward. You have to lightly push down on lever to get it into neutral. And won't go into reverse at all. It will start, but will barely idle. Happened all of a sudden. No issues before. Do I have to take the sterndrive completely apart to replace the cable? Must I take the lower half apart, (prop, shaft, etc.) to separate the upper and lower? Or do the two just meet up when gears come together for lack of better words? Thanks for any input.

Also does any know where to get the proper cable for the unit?

Thanks

This will give you step by step directions.

Any questions you have I can try to answer. I did mine, it is not easy... but I got it done.

Does OMC change out like Mercruiser?

Oh crap, sorry, I saw the 5.7 and skipped right over the OMC part... not having a good day :smt009

I did (sort of) my 85 OMC on my Bayliner (5.7)

Not sure if the Sea Ray's had the same shifting issues and the Bayliners did during that era, but I can tell you sure sound symptomatic of the same issue. DO NOT run until fixed or you will also be buying new gears for your lower unit in addition to the cables.

Go to http://www.baylinerownersclub.org and poke around - some great step by step instructions (with pics) on doing the shift cable and where to get them.

Ain't easy - I pulled mine and gave up putting back on - took in and paid $500 for that part (including cable) about 4 years ago.
