stern shift cable adjustment

When I disconnected the lower shift cable on my 1976 Sea ray, I pushed the cable all the way in and it locked in Foward, as it is supposed to. When I pull it all of the way out, it will spin freely and will not lock in reverse. Any suggestions, maybe the wrong cable? Thanks

I posted the directions to installing and adjusting the cable here a week or two ago. Should be a simple search.
