Stern Light not working

The stern light (all white) does not work on my 210 Sundeck. When I purchased it the original light looked like it was hit by the previous owners roof at his dock for the top of it was pretty smashed up. I purchased a new stern light including the pole yet it still doesn't work. All the other lights on the boat do work so I don't think it's a fuse. I took a quick look at the connections at the base and they seem OK. My next step is to take a hard look at the base connections with a volt meter and start working from there but before I start to re-invent the wheel, I'd thought I'd ask here if anyone had a similar problem, what was the cause and correction.

If the top was smashed, it may have munched the socket where it plugs in. Get a flashlight and voltmeter and you'll know. Does the new one plug in and do the pins line up OK? It could have bent it and ripped one of the wires or the plastic base.
