I have a loose wire or something under the helm on my SD240. It kind of has a life of its own because even when the volume is completely turned down I still get static thru the rear speakers. I looked everywhere and moved bundles around and it "fixed it" but I know this is temporary. Has anyone experienced this?

Loose ground wire? Static might be coming from other 12 volt circuits.

Thanks Dan but I can't find a loose ground wire.

I was out all day yesterday with no prob. But today it started again.

I have some serious intermittent static over the Clarion whether the engine is running or not regardless of whether the tuner, CD, or Aux is selected. I have checked every connection I can get to.

Are you using an external amplifier?

If so there may be speaker relays, built in the amp, that have become compromised. These contacts can degrade over time and in a boat environment it is excelerated.

If so I can help you with an exersize to test.

External amp is a good place to check. I had the same type of problem you are describing. I tried everything - rewriting the ground, removed a crossover that wasn't used anymore, tried different head unit - with no luck. I removed the amplifiers and have had no problem since. My head unit is plenty powerful, so I didn't replace the amps.

I do have an amp and my son also was pointing to it. I'd be very interested in a test HIFI.

I also have a very annoying intermittent static but only on my cockpit speakers, not the salon there are two amps and it seems to only happen with the genset running where do I start ? Could this be the same problem as Bama boater? Amps?

I had a guy look at it. He says it's the amp.

I only have a buzzing sound when I turn on nav lights , don't know wher to start though what do you think HIFI???

Boltman

I have been off line for some time . . . selling my boat . . . so sorry if this is late but I can help.

If you have not fixed static while running nav lights yet I would check the contacts on each nav light receptacle. Take time and clean each one and have a bulb to replace if static does not go away. There is nothing in your DC nav light that would cause a buzz either than a bad contact.

For All . . .

Many folks are experiencing static in sound systems In this thread and others I have looked at I am finding people are solving issue at the expense of amp replacement and all the labor cost even if you DIY.

The most popular issue is the speaker protection that is in the amp.

AVOID this issue by ALLWAYS turning your volume down all the way when you are powering your home audio or 12volt audio on and off. These internal connections all fail sooner or later. It is a matter of time and care. When you power the amp off while there is power crossing the protection relay's open/close circuit it will arc at contact. You are disconnecting a live circuit. This arcing at power down is slowly burning that circuit connection. This also explains why it is intermittent for many folks. You can arc the circuit and get a better contact. Regardless . . . it is going down hill from day one and you can slow that failure down by turning volume to zero at power on and power off.

A nice simple fix that worked for me. Run your head unit ground wire directly to the amp.
