Stereo and speakers

I have the original stereo and speakers on my 1998 290. Most of the speakers are not working anymore... I think there is one lone functioning one on the radar arch. I was trying to do a little trouble shooting and I checked the wires going into the speakers... Shouldn't there be a current when the stereo is on? If there is no current, does that mean the wires are not connected at the stereo itself?

How do you pull the stereo out of its space?? It seems to be in there really good... can't really shimmy it out.

Help!!

You are kidding, right?? I am so completely clueless about it so I am not even sure if you are kidding or not.

I SHOULD mention that I would like to keep the stereo functional after pulling it out if I can... it's not a high priority item as far as use on my boat so I am not in a big rush to get a new one... just would like to be able to hear it when I DO use it.

there are usually special tools that engage tabs on the side of the radio chassis. You slide these in at each side, they click and then you pull them, along with the head unit out of the mount. If this fails and you can't get it from the bottom... resort to the second option special tool four sunns showed you an image of.

Marine head units aren't very expensive ($150-$400)... I wouldn't be overly concerned with damaging a head unit that's 10 years old

If the unit is in an automotive type holder you can use the special tool mentioned. You can buy them from an installer. I asked an installer at Circuit City and he gave me a set. They should sell for less then $5.

3x on the special tool. Normally there is a trim plate around the head unit that pops off that exposes the metal sleeve the stereo is in and on each side you slide in the tool that basicaly moves the tabs for the stereo to slide out. It's still a tight fit you'll need to use some muscle when you pull it out

Thanks for the replies guys....

Anybody have an answer regarding the speaker wires and whether I should be able to see any power when checking with a meter?

If you are concerned about broken wires just use a continuity tester. From all that you have described, I would quit screwin' around and just get another stereo and new speakers.

I agree - if they were working for 10 years you were lucky. Boats take a lot of abuse plus the water. The wires would not fail but the speakers and stereo will over time.

My 1997 SeaRay has a stero mounted in a sleeve in the dash. When my radio got funky, I just bought a new one for $150. The sleeve was mounted to the fiberglass with four screws. Pop the screws. . . and out it came.

I have a 1989 340 SeaRay Express. Original Speakers! I did change out the stereo with tape deck for one with cd player. Whenever it rains, like it has this last week the speakers in the cabin work but not up top. when it dries out I'm sure it will work. checking cont. wont work if the wires have grounded out due to corrosion. If you get current and no sound then its the speakers. but if any of the speakers work. just take the questionable speakers out, and hook them up to the wires where the good speakers are, even if only one at a time. Im sure you'll find they work. the other way is once you get the stereo out, just hook the speakers directly to the stereo with new wires, if they work, you know its the wires!
