I’ve done a good amount of research on this subject and also wanted to get anyone else input before I set out to make purchases. I know this topic has been discussed at length in the past as I have spent a bunch of time researching :smt024, but I wanted to try and get some thoughts on my specific application. I have a 1995 Sea Ray 175 that my wife and I bought last summer. We are looking to add a stereo system as the one it came with was basically non-existent (tape deck and one speaker...yikes:huh:).

Although we are not looking to add some monstrosity of a system I do want to make sure we have quality sound and do it right the first time. The vast majority of our time on the water is spent anchored just of a sandy shore where we can grill and wade out into the water a bit. So my number one priority is to make sure we have as much reserve capacity in the system to allow us to play some music as long as possible (we have been known to spend 4-5 hours on the beach). Obviously adding a second battery to the system is a must.

So with that being said I’m looking to keep the stereo fairly simple as to not draw too much power off the system. Right now I’m looking at adding a Sony receiver that will probably run 1 or maybe 2 pairs of speakers. I’d also like to have a 50x2 RMS Alpine amp to run a decent pair of 6.5 speakers or some MTX TM7702 speakers which seem to get good reviews for the price. My thinking with these is if powered well they would get enough bass that I would not feel compelled to add a sub at any point. I’m also towing with some ideas of how to best mount these so that they will project towards us in the water.

I’ve done some research and the receiver I am looking at draws 3-5amps. The Alpine amp does not have a rating (this is an old one I have around the house). It has a 20amp fuse built in to my guess is it’s somewhere below that but who knows.

My biggest questions with this project revolve around the battery and reserve capacity. It seems a vast majority of people use Optima batteries and have had success with them. While it appears that these are a much higher quality battery, when comparing these to other “wet cell” batteries they tend to have less reserve capacity. You seem to pay about 50% more for an Optima with 120 reserve capacity vs. a “wet cell” with 205 reserve capacity. I don’t mind spending the extra coin in something of better quality but my question is will it meet my particular needs better.

My number one priority is reserve capacity to run the stereo. I’ll use a switch to makes sure I do not drain my starting battery. Since we will be doing much more anchoring then running I will probably have to do most of the charging at home with a charger for the second battery.

Thanks in advance for any thoughts!

Hey Robb welcome to Club Sea Ray, my wife and I have a 98 180 Bowrider with a Sony deck two 6.5 Jensens running off of the deck and a 10 inch Pioneer Sub running on a 600 Watt Kenwood amp, we only have a Advance Auto Marine starting battery (24 class) not for sure the reserve time but we sat on the water last year with it going for almost 6 hours and she started no problem. Now we have only done this once but I would say with 2 batteries you would be just fine with any decent marine batteries In my opinion. Good luck with your new boat and put up some pics of your setup as we are wanting to add some to ours and could use some ideas as well.

Just make sure you have a separate battery for starting or make sure you have a quality well charged jumper pack!

Thanks for the input earlandamys. My plan is to run the stereo separate from the starter battery. That way if we run it all the way down I can still use the original battery to start it up and run. I'll take some pictures once I start the project and keep you updated.

My other dilemma is where to mount the speakers. Currently they are set up under the gunwale (firing down) and do not provide for very good sound in that position. I would like to have them up so that we can hear them from the water (similar to a wakeboard tower) but alas we do not have a tower. Not sure the bimini can handle the weight so I will have to get creative. I may try and mount them in the gunwale in an enclosure that I could move up to a better location when we are on the beach.

On my last boat (22' walk around) I had a Sony Explode system with 6 disc changer, 4 6.5 speakers and a 8: bazooka tube all powered by 2 amps (total near 1000 watts). The boat came with a group 24 battery. I added a good group 27 deep cycle battery (and a dual switch to isolate batteries). When we were anchored I would switch to battery #2 and let it rip. I could get roughly 5 hours with the stero cranked, more if the volume was at half. When I left I switched to battery 1 and off we would go. Never had a problem.

Robb, don't know if you have done anything with your stereo set up yet but I just added 2 Kenwoods to the bow of our boat and it really helped getting the sound out. Have a look at the pics to see if this is something you may want to do. It was a very easy install with my Dremel and a cutting bit. IMAG0114.jpgIMAG0113.jpg

Not sure if you have made any decissions yet on your stereo, but I have the exact same boat you do. The entire sound system has been replaced and here is what is installed:

Sony head unit with ipod control in the glove box
2 Sony wired remote controls (transom and helm)
4 Polk Audio speakers in gunwale
1 MTX 10" sub in sealed box in passenger footwell
1 MB Quart 4 channel amp (bridged and running at 3 channel)
Battery selector switch with 2 batteries

The system is loud, clean and crystal clear. We are one of the loudest boats on the water and everyone talks when I pull into the island. The remotes are a must for the driver if you do any wakeboarding or watersking and the one at the swim platform is great for when we are swimming and hanging on the beach.

Do not use the Optime batteries as they do not do well in deep cycle applications and will not last. I have been professionally installing audio in homes, boats and cars for over 25 years and have tried the Optimas several times with no luck. Good old wet cell batteries work the best, can be deep cycled and will last a long time.

Good luck!

sgreiss,

I appreciate the info. It seems you have a similar system to what my ultimate goal is. I have made a few decisions so far.

- I got a Sony head unit with ipod control for the glove box as well (installed it and found out it was defective, the new one is on it's way.... very frustrating).

- I also got a wired remote for the driver. I'm going to mount this on the side above the gunwale so that I can easily reach it while driving as well as while standing in the water while on the beach.

- I also already purchased a battery. I got a marine deep cycle Duralast. Good old fashion wet cell, and very well priced for 185 reserve capacity.

As far as the rest goes I am still up in the air. I have a couple older alpine amps that I plan to use. Both are 50x2 RMS and bridgeable. I also have an old 8" sub that I could put in there to save some $ for the time being. My biggest concern is what to do about the speakers. When out on the lake a few weeks ago I hooked up a couple speakers that I had laying around to just the head until and while they were sitting in the gunwale they were very hard to hear outside of the boat. I realize that once I get some amplified this will get much better, but it has me worried about the sounds projecting out onto the water. We tend to hang out about 30ft from the boat when we are on the beach. I'd like to get some speakers set up so that they project out on the water better like off of a wakeboard tower but not sure how I will get that done without having a tower on my boat.

EarlandMays,

I really like that placement of the speakers you have. Unfortunately I can not do the same on mine. I have cushions permanently attached on all sides of that area. I would have to modify that as well otherwise I would do what you did in a heartbeat.

Robb

I understand the frustration with installing things and then not having it work......seems to happen way to much these days!

What remote did you go with? I used the smaller Sony RMX 11M so I had more mounting options on the driver side. I'll try to send some pictures for you to see for ideas.

The Alpine amps should work fine depending on the volume you are looking for. You could possibly parallel 2 sets of speakers on one amp if it is stable at 2 ohms for more volume. The 8 inch sub will work as well as I would bet the Alpine amp puts out around 150W bridged at 4 ohms. Just depends on how much bass you are looking for.

One idea for rear speakers that you can use to hear when beached would be indoor/outdoor speakers like Polk Atrium. Thay can sit in the gunwale tray when running and then hang from the bimini (if you have one) when beached. You can make some hooks or clamps that can be attached to the speaker bracket to hang on the bimini. I have done this before and it works quite well.

I went with that same Sony RMX 11M remote. Seemed simple and should be easy to install. I'd love to see some pictures of your set up to help give me some ideas of where to mount everything.

I'm not looking for crazy volume or bass, just decent sound quality and enough to hear and enjoy while on the beach. I think the amps should be enough to get that accomplished. I don’t need to be the loudest guy out there haha

I have been giving a lot of thought to that exact same idea (hanging some speakers when beached). My only concern there is the weight. My bimini does the job but the thin aluminum worries me that it may not hold the speakers well. The last thing I want to do is bend one of those or break the plastic connector at the bottom. I have also seen several people use 6.5" speakers and build their own "tower speaker cans" with PVC and hang those up when beached so I may give that a shot.

Do you have any idea what kind of draw down your system has on the battery?

Robb

My system is running at around 600W RMS with a 6o Amp circuit for the audio gear. The draw is around 42 Amps / hour on a Dual purpose (starting/deep cycle) Class 27 battery with an RC of 180 Amp hours. I can run the sound system for 4 hours full tilt or 6 hours at a normal listening level before it dies.

Here are some pics of the 2 Sony remotes tha I have installed.

Awsome look. Exactly what I want to do on mine. Did you have any issues with depth clearance of the speakers. Thats my biggest fear not knowing exactly whats back there and how much room I have.

No.........I actually installed 4 Polk Atrium speakers that are self contained and hanging from brackets under the gunale. Also have a 10 inch MTX sub in a small sealed box under the glovebox on the passenger side. It keeps the sound directed into the boat and sounds incredible. Everyone comments how good it sounds when they hear it.

I just finished mine as well. I have a pyle 320w stereo that I installed and 4 5.25" speakers that I made enclosures for with ample enough wire to sit on the sun platform in back. I just added a Rockford/Fosgate 250.2 with a Q Logix 12" sub attached to it under the glovebox as well. It sounds amazing. You get the base thumping and you part the water ahead of you. I added another 1000CCA battery just for the stereo but didn'y add it to the alternator. Figure when it is done...well it is done. Have another one that size for starting so it will never drain that one. Got the batteries from a friend who had them used and as spares. I am not sure the wattage of the Rockford but when I switch it on. it drains the power from the Pyle screen so I just bought a power cap last weekend and just waiting to add it on. I can only turn it up so far then the screen goes dark and a little higher it will cut completely out. We go to a place here in NW Indiana that the boaters call Boater's Beach and you have to have or have access to a boat to get there. It has a warm water discharge from a cogen plant. Yes I do glow at night but hell...I will die of something! May as well have fun doing it! My wife laughs at me but when I start to thump the Music she likes to dance to...the whole croud does the same.

Interesting thread .
Just curious as to where & how you mounted/located the second battery ??
Any pictures at all ?
I am guessing it is in behind the existing one but looks a very awkward spot to get in to ??
Maybe via the engine compartment ?
Any info a great help.
Would love to upgrade the stereo myself ....... one day
Cheers Pete

Cheers Merge360.
Love the boat & extras you have added.
Looks great.
Your battery set-up looks cool,
Although my180 is a different (smaller) set-up there are a couple of ideas there I can use,
Regards Pete

I will take pics of my 175 when I can get out there to do it. Haven't been out there in a few days. It was an easy install and still installing. Have to add the power cap now and two more speakers since there are two more outputs on the amp driving the sub. I also put the amp and sub under glovebox. Now the stereo worked lose so I have to take the package down to fix it but also have the cap that I will sit on the sub also. Made the speaker enclosures myself and they tuck away under the gunrails fare back and front. The pale is a car stereo but it stays in garage when not on lake. Looks like I may install some mood lights now when I get mo ed next yr. The second battery is just sitting in the compartment under stern starboard side under cushion. Not to alternator...just trickle charged while in garage. Just so I don't get stuck without starting charge. Ill get pics this week and see how to upload. If interested in the enclosures after seeing it...I will draw up again and post it also (lost the design after computer crash since it wasn't backed up.

Merge360...like the mood lights. Looks like my Kia Soul except mine are red. May add that to mine when I get to lake havasu next yr if I spend more evening time on lake. For now i'm just anchoring and naming at the beach.
