I have quite a bit of pay when I turn the sterring wheel. How can I make an adjustment to tighten this up?

You need to find where the source is: is it linkage at transom, cable movement, or spool/rack and pinion assembly (depends on your installation) at helm then go from there.

I'd take the extra pay and not give it back, if I were you.

I assume you have cable steering. There is no adjustments for end play. Check the steering linkage behind the engine that's mounted to the transom plate. Have someone turn the helm back and forth. If you don't see any worn or loose parts, then it's the cable mechanism. The cable mechanism has to be replaced as a unit. It's not serviceable. Unusual for a boat only 8 years old to have a badly worn cable, but it could happen.

Best regards,
Frank

Hi Jim,

I have a 2000 260DA with a similar problem. I posted a question on the forum recently but it was probably badly worded as all that responded assumed thre was a problem with the cable or with the outdrive leg.
My problem is with the Teleflex performance tilt mechanism which has a lot of play in it. There is also a slight amount of play in the rack and pinion but I have disconnected the entire steering system and know it is the helm unit. I have recently ordered a replacement because there is little than can be done to tighten things up. I'll post back when it's fitted to report on any improvement.

There is no adjustment. I installed a rotary system to get rid of the 5 inch travel of the rack. Rotary had 3 inch travel and wasmuch stiffer . Installed hydraulic this winter and it is marvelous. Zero free travel. Smooth... See my poost a few days ago.

After replacing the tilt helm with a new unit, the steering is a lot stiffer as there is no play from the helm unit but there is still some movement due to the rack. I think hawkerjim's hydraulic solution is the way to go for me.

cheers
David
