My bridge helm steering box is leaking. The marina mechanic said the steering box needs to be re sealed but is less than 50 percent chance it will work. I believe it is a sea star brand. I have checked all the hose and they are tight and not leaking. They said a new one is 900 + Labor to replace this unit. Does this sound right?

If its a teleflex sea start unit I did the reseal myself. Mine was leaking pretty bad from the back and down last season walked into a local marine supply and told them my issue and he had a reseal kit in stock. Took me all of 3 hours and hasn't leaked since. (Take apart very slowly. Lots of small Dudads and bearings)

I have never had one leak in the back, so not sure. I have replaced the front seal on a few of our boats. It seems ours have only leaked during cold weather and stop in the spring

I spoke with the mechanic today and he informed it was leaking in the back. He still feels it is a crap shoot with trying to re seal it. He stated it was a Sea Star 1000TT?

Here ya go.it I think the kit was 40 bucks. All it is is one big paper gasket and o rings. There's no reason you sHouldn't be able to reseal the pump. I would give 40$ and a couple hours of your time before hanging over well over a grand.

Figure out your pump model. There's a sticker on top by the fill cap. Should say 1.7 , or 2.0 and then match It to the charts on the web site above and that's the part number for the seal kit. West marine sells them as well
