I fly into Newark often - a result of there being very few direct flights anywhere from Buffalo (except to Newark, of course...)

Coming in from the South, I often see partially submerged wrecks of ships and barges along these waters. It seems like there are quite a few. Any of you NY/NJ boaters know anything about these? They look interesting from the air. It must be nasty in the dark along there...

There's wrecks everywhere in NY/NJ waters. Cruising up the Hudson you see many.

There's an island in the Hudson Near Newburgh where the guy made his fortune scavenging wrecks in NY harbor and then built this castle to store and sell the stuff.

My father used to keep a boat in Sewaren just north of the wrecks. Those wrecks have been there for as long as I remember, 30+ years. They are visible and just outside the channel.. I don't ever remember any reports of anyone running into them, but I'm sure someone did. As kids my friends and I were really dumb...we used to waterski there almost everyday..Never even thought about the quality of the water or the oil tankers docked nearby, as far as we knew that was just New Jersey boating O_O...I was always curious why someone chose there to scuttle the wrecks..
