Starts and Shuts Down when warmed Up

I can't provide any 'scientific' reason but from the reviews on the web and recent personal experience, I believe it to be a better product.

Doug
Doug, I just did some checking on Startron and I think I'll go with it. There is lots on the Net about it and it seems to be mostly favorable. Thanks, Al W.:smt038

Early on in this Thread, Hampton suggested I service the normal Ignition items. Good advice as it turns out. The Distributor on my engine is a mess. I did not know that the Internals of my Distributor should be changed out periodically as a service PM. I'll be doing this work myself so it's not as if I was getting uneeded work done. When all is done I'll report some more if someone requests it. Al W.

Thanks. I had similar symptoms and the dealer found nothing wrong after a 2 hour boat ride at my expense. Then, I pulled the dist. cap and, like you said, it was a mess.

Al,

Did your friend check the fuel pressure on the engine at cold, when it was running and when you try to restart it? It is an easy diagnostic and will eliminate the fuel system (not necessarily the fuel) as the problem. Also, having the fuel tested is an easy way to determine if the fuel itself is the problem.

John, Your point is well taken and is to be considered as we search for an answer. I also learned from my Mech. a simple technique for examining our fuel. Pull the Filter and empty it into a glass jar. Let it settle over night and take a look. (Why didn't I think of that?). I had hoped to Jump into the engine compartment today but sadly a close friend lost his brother and I'll be at the Wake. I'll continue to Post updates. Al W.

FYI.
Microbial Growth In Fuel
When gasoline or diesel fuel sits in a tank with excessive air space, the daily temperature changes produce condensation (water formation) on tank walls. This water falls into the fuel where it sinks to the bottom providing a breeding ground for microbial spores that feed on hydrocarbon fuels. Known as "diesel algae" these are primarily fungi, yeast and mold contaminants. If left untreated, diesel algae will ruin the fuel causing clogs in filters, fuel lines and injectors. Common treatment for this problem up until now has been the use of a biocide to kill existing growth and prevent a future infestation. The use of a biocide can however cause other problems. Once the growth is killed, the resulting biomass settles to the tank bottom where it decays forming organic acids. The acids then deteriorate the fuel and cause corrosion of the tank walls, injectors and fuel delivery system. Additionally, biocides can be harmful to all those who handle them or come in contact with treated fuel, plus they can cause environmental damage if spilled. Star Tron® uses its enzyme technology to disperse microbial growth throughout the fuel. These microbial particles are then either safely burned away or filtered out.

Al,

Starton makes a great product.....but I don't think that is the problem you have. Your mechanic is recommending an "old school" solution which I still use to check fuel. Major issues will show up that way, more subtle ones won't.

Sorry to hear about your friend's brother.

Thanks for the comments John. As a general practice I avoid additives. My thoughts are along the lines of "Snake oil". Marvel Mystery is a long time favorite as is Mobile 1 in modern engines. I'm happy to hear your favorable comments about Starton. My research agrees with your assessment but there is nothing like an end user opinion, especially a qualified one. Being a Shade Tree mechanic the glass jar is where I'll have to start. We have the Grandkids today so my wrenching will have to wait. Fuel Pressure will certainly be examined as we go down the road. Thanks for your interest. Al W.:smt038:smt024

Here is where I'm at with this problem. I changed out the Pick Up Coil, Ignition Module, Dist. Cap, Rotor and the Ignition Coil. Added Startron, Marvel Mystery Oil @ 1/2 Oz. per Gal. and just for the sake of it one bottle of Boost 103. Boat starts great and restarts and restarts and restarts! Next come the Sea trials but they will have to wait as life is busy for us these days. (all good). I have 20 Gal. of Aviation fuel I might dump in the boat but do not want it to Mask any continuing problem. Thanks again to all of you who took an interest in helping me. Al W.

:smt013:smt013:smt013:smt013:smt013 Yep, that's me!!! Same problem even though she runs strong as anything. Starts cool no problem after lunch it's no go. Let it cool overnight and it's off to the races. It's got to be Vapor Lock!?:smt100 Any and all comments are appreciated! 1997 Merc/Horizon 7.4/300HP, TBI. I hear the Fuel Pump cycle as normal to experience. Where can I check Mercruiser Service bulletins? :smt024 Thanks, Al W. 9/5/08
