Starting my teak work tomorrow

Do like we do, remove what can be removed. Bring it home to a warm shop and pour a nice glass of warming fluid(Cat Daddy works best in my shop, N.C. Moonshine)for yourself. Take your time, then sit back and enjoy the fruit of the labor. Post so photos when you get some done

Jack/Coke is the beverage of choice... I'll try to get some pics today. I think the natural cetol followed by the clear is the way to go.

I agree with Henry about the media blast of teak. If you've turned down the air pressure obviously that will help, but I prefer old fashion sanding to get the desired smoothness.
I'm also a huge fan of Systemthree WR-LPU topcoat.

I still have it on my cockpit table and it's held up to the sun and condensating beverages.

Okay. Blasting didn't work. It's just too abrasive, even turning the pressure down it just isn't the best way to clean the teak. Time to start sanding....

My teak had oil on it when I got the boat.
I cleaned it with a two step product. I think it was Teka. Then sanded it, and put a couple of coats of Sikkens Natural Teak on it. Now I just scuff it lightly every year and put a top coat on. It always looks great.
I didn't do as thorough a job with the inserts in the platform because I didn't remove them. But I plan to remove them from the boat this year, take them home, go over them properly, and they should be perfect too.

The point of teak, for me, even though I hate the work it requires, is that it adds a warmth and classic feel that is not found on newer boats in my price range.

Me too!

I finally actually started sanding today. I used 220 with a palm sander and it took the wood right down. I only did 4 small pieces, so I also wiped them down to remove the loose dust and then wiped them down lightly with mineral spirits. Then I went ahead and applied a coat of the cetol natural with a foam brush. It looks pretty good, I'll do two more coats and put the these pieces back on the door they were removed from. I'll sand the rest of the wood for this one seat base and try to get it coated with 3 coats by Sunday. I'd like to go to the boat and reinstall the ones I have and remove the ones from the other seat base Monday. I'll get some pics tomorrow...I hope.

But at least I actually started.

I couldn't remember the name when I was typing my last post, but that's what I used. I thought about not writing that step but I went with mineral spirits instead...I must be getting old!

I to have been on a teak mission. I sanded down with 80 then 150 and on to 220. Seemed good to me so I wiped clean. Working on the anchor platform and teak pieces on the bow and will move to back if successful. Has been recommended to me by someone who works on wooden boats and airplanes to seal with Marxcite first, then I plan on 3-4 coats of Sitkins Cetol Natural Marine. I am excited for the look and crossing my fingers I am doing it all proper and not screwing up these pieces on my boat. Oh I got into the anchor platform because there are so many rusted leaking screw and bolt holes in my anchor locker they all have to be cleaned up and re-bedded to at least slow some of my leaks!

Read most of the thread and didn't see anyone mention vacuuming the teak after sanding. I have always done that to get the dust out of the pores of the wood prior to wiping with acetone. I prefer McClusky's Man O War Marine Spar Varnish. Did 5 coats when I bought the boat 2 years ago and do 1 coat early summer as maintenance. Looks awesome.

I've seen that step in videos online. Maybe I'll try that with the next round of wood.

A while back someone posted pictures of custom teak inserts they made and installed in the swim platform. They had the Sea Ray logo cut in to them. They really looked sharp. If I had any real skill with wood I would love to have something like that.

I have plans for an extended platform as these older boats have short platforms. Plus mine is scarred and has some internal wood that needs to be replaced. I'm hoping that this can be next winter's only project...

Yea right!

At this rate it'll take me months to get done with my teak...but I'm going on vacation for a few days with my better half. We're taking the land yacht to Florida. BUT, I did finish some trim pieces by sanding and applying 3 coats of Cetol...Holy Cow! And while I don't have pics, it looks great! It looks really nice without the gloss. I'll do more when I get back...Have a great week guys!

I have two coats of sikkens to start and mycock pit and taft rails are going on year 4. The only thing I do is wash and adda coat each year.
