Hello all- just bought a 2011 240 sundeck. When starting, i put the battery selector switch on one of the batteries then I turn the key on and allow it to cycle through the system check. Making sure the kill toggle by the throttle is on then push and release the start/stop button. The system (or maybe the starter solenoid) clicks fairly loud then does nothing. I get a “system fault” saying turn off key and try again. Doing this 10 times, and sometimes one or two additional times, the starter will engage and she fires right up. Shut it down and either the same thing or it may fire the first time. Very strange… No owners manual was given to me and the research I’ve done is fruitless. Any ideas? Am I going through the starting sequence correct? Thanks for any feedback. Kevin

Thanks scoflaw. In reading about replacing it, if that’s what it is, sounds like a pretty good challenge. Maybe neutral safety switch? Haven’t tried wiggling the throttle handle yet- seems to have a very definite neutral position…
Maybe a bad ground. New batteries and no corrosion there. Just to clarify- 2011 240 has the slave solenoid on the starter itself?

That's not the slave, if a 2011 had one it would be on top of the motor, next in line after the 50amp breaker.

Jump the the 2 large lugs together to test if it's your problem.

That is a relief. I’ll try it! Thanks JHornsby3
Couldn’t find a hard copy anywhere

Turns out the slave solenoid if not on the starter itself is somewhere near it. I can hear the click distinctly near the back of the motor. These pictures show some sort of power junction- doesn’t look like a solenoid that I’ve seen anyway. I tried jumping the main wire to the smaller red wire and nothing at all. See below

Not sure what the other switches/relays/fuses?are.

Try following the big red wire to the actual starter and take a pic of that. Your slave solenoid might be attached to the starter itself, or be a separate unit. If it's attached, usually you have to replace both together. I've had the same problems before, and it could be the starter or the solenoid on the way out. If it works intermittently now, soon it won't work at all. While you're at it, clean all the connections. If they are loose or dirty, that can also an intermittent start but from what I can see in your pics, those connections look clean.

Just a sample (#1 solenoid). You could jump those lugs but easier said than done on a single-engine boat if access is tight:

That is what I’ve always known as a solenoid. Is a “slave solenoid” just a remote version? I took out the cooler that’s adjacent to the engine compartment and still can’t clearly see how to get to it. I will take another members advice and have a shop replace them both. Thanks Phil
