Hello,I have to replace the starter in my 1981 260 sundancer, it has a single 350 motor. Has anyone had to to this before ? Does the motor need to be lifted up?

I replaced the starter on my 1986 268 sundancer, it had a 454 at the time. the motor did not have to be lifted. It really is not that difficult but the younger you are the easier it is.

You don't have to pull the engine, but you do need to be flexible! Long story, but I had to pull half my engine apart (blew a piston) - and saw where that starter is. I sat there looking at it, and cursed it for being where it is LOL The only way I can see to remove it from my engine would to be suspended upside down in mid air! Seriously though, at 6'-3" and 235 lbs, if I had to do mine, I'd take the hit, spend the money on an exhaust manifold gasket, and remove that side to get to it. You boat's bigger than mine, so you can probly get in there.

Starter on a big block is easy. Sort of on the top back of the engine (on a straight drive or outdrive motor). Never did a 350 but it sounds like beeotch.

It's a PIA but not impossible. I did the starter on my starboard motor without dropping the exhaust manifold. With a single engine you should have more space than I did when I wedged myself in the bilge between the motor and the starboard tank.
If you have the starter with the two equal length bolts than you can use one of those comnination wrenches with the ratcheting box end. That will be better than using a regular ratchet and socket.
Hopefully your starter still has the support bracket coming off the end of it to the block. If so, that should be the last thing you remove and the first thing you put back up because it will hold the weight of the starter while you get your bolts started.

hellow there:
not impossible to do , very important to cut the current of the battery before. And the positive cable have to be insolated just as a precaution. If is there for a long time you will need a hamer to lose it from the engine with movement all around. you can do it just need time to removed. also went you remove the hot wire grap the red cable with one hand and the wrench with the other hand. if not you will break the silenoid it is plastic. put some CRC656 to help lose the starter.
good luck
Jorge
