Hi,

I have a 2003 Sundancer (280). I hear a grinding sound when I start the engine. It stops when the engine is started. I sprayed some belt grip and that did not solve the problem.
I think it may be the starter as I see some rust on it. Look like my manifold gasket was leaking maybe last year and the salt water went onto the starter.

Anyone know how to replace one of these? I have 2 4.3 engines.
Boy, they do not make it easy to get to these items.

Suggestions?

Thanks

I had to replace a starter last year and it really wasn't that bad. The Napa near me had a new marine one and included a new solenoid - and make sure you get a marine version. You can find the starters online - but I went with Napa and it was only about $130. Disconnect your batteries so you can disconnect the wires on the solenoid without shorting anything out. My starter was then held on with 2 bolts and came right out. There are different 4.3 starters out there - some have off-set bolt holes - others have a flat mounting surface. There is also standard and counter rotation units so make sure you get the correct one. I'd take the old one in with you so they can help match it up.

or. . .if you are really lazy, as I was, you can call your marine mechanic and say "My starter is bad". When i was lazy. . .it cost about $400 installed.
