ok for the past month or two i have been working on my boat more than enjoying it. my most recent problem is the starter, it is spinning but not catching the fly wheel so i pulled it an tested. its good, spins an kicks out so i reinstalled. it turned the motor half way over an then spun again. now i get nothing but spinning. has anyone had a problem like this or have any ideas of what i can do to fix it?:smt013

as inexpensive as the small block starters are I would install a new one for peace of mind and turn motor over and inspect flywheel and then I would guess its pretty much trial and errror it shouldn't be that hard to figure out

I asked that question as I got in an argument this weekend with a dork when I was working on an outboard and he was working on his inboard... talked about how he got all his parts from the local NAPA dealer as they were the same... they are not... your starter needs to be ignition protected.

That being said, I used to have the symptoms of the starter disengaging prematurely on my 20 foot jet boat (Mercruiser 6 cyl). The problem ended up being the battery was going bad and the starter could not get enough amps and would disengage. So... make sure the battery and connections on the battery are good (no corrosion) and the battery is healthy.. easiest thing to check.

Other than that, you could have the clutch on the starter going bad or the solenoid having corroded terminals reducing the available amps...
