2001 weekender merc 5.0 220 hp. Worked last summer when my in laws had it. Brought it home today and nothing. No click no attempt at a click. New battery, checked fuses. Would love some input as well as where the starter and slave are located (seems like it should be obvious).

A new battery can go dead. did you properly test it? Remember guys it all starts there.

Thanks Mike, I will test it again but it's off the shelf with an April 16 sticker. To that point when I turn the ignition what's my optimal battery reading on my dash? 12? Or greater?

This may sound absurd but is the safety/lanyard switch set to on?? My 260 last year did same thing...until I realized I had accidentally flipped the lanyard switch...

what do you hear when you turn the key on? anything, beep? pump sound?

move the shifter in case the neutral safety switch is out of adjustment.

I do hear the beeps and pump sound. By moving the shifter my memory is push the button on the bottom and move it forward for gas. Are you saying don't press the button and just leave it in neutral position?

Yes battery switch is on. it has two batteries one for dep cycle starting and one for accesories I even isolated for deep cycle. People discuss checking all the wire connections I am guessing that is at the battery terminal. Are there other connection points to check?

Just checking...you say the deep cycle is isolated? You also mention "deep cycle starting" which is not the case. Deep cycle is for the accessories and the other is for starting the engine. Do you have them confused? Is the wrong one switched off?

So my boat lay out has a deep cycle/starter (the typical square ) in the first position and a longer rectangular battery in the two position. My understanding was the longer 2 position battery was for aux is this not the case? Also wouldnt i get the most bang if it was on the 1/2 position utilizing both batteries?

Thanks in advance.

That sounds correct. Smaller battery in position #1 is the starting battery and the longer rectangular battery in position #2 is for the house/accessories.

Although using the 1/2 position utilizes both batteries, if the deep cycle is weak you won't notice any difference when cranking the engine.

Mystery solved. Starter was seized replaced for $150 started right up.
