I wanted to pass along a great experience I had with Greg's Marine & Auto Electric here in Seattle.
I had my old starter off my old boat, that I replaced when I had another issue.
Anyway I brought it in to Greg in Ballard(north-end neighborhood of Seattle) and he completely rebuilt the starter for $138 including tax.
He does all sorts of electrical repairs on alternators and starters.
Years ago I thought I had a bad alternator. I pulled it off and he tested it for me and said it's fine, replace your batteries. Did that and he was right. That kind of honesty is not found too often so I wanted to give him a plug.
I'll pass along the info if anyone needs it.

Good words.

My local Gen shop rebuilt my Windlass Motor for $75. Do that math.

Most electric motor, generator, and alternator repairs are simply brush replacements. Brushes for most alternators, for example are between $3-10. I finally had to replace the alternator on my Navigator. The rear bearing gave up at 270k miles - ball bearings everywhere on the top of the engine. I normally just replace the brushes every 100,000 miles. Many AC motors are brushless. Otherwise, when a motor stops working, it's probably that the brushes have worn out.

Best regards,
Frank

My Windlass motor had a broken post, and another broke during the re-build. I had taken it apart, but took it to them to do the tough work.

yeah, that's a good deal for sure.
My repair included a new solenoid gear chamber and gear.
I was happy and he does great work. I'm hoping to get him some additional business, as he says the import Sierra Marine market is begining to affect him
