Starlink

So I think there are a couple things at play here. Their maritime unit is designed to work under way which is fantastic but not a game changer for me. I just need it to work while at anchor or the dock. My thought is if the country has coverage I should be fine…for now. Only time will tell how this plays out.

as far as mounts found this I like

Not sure that is relevant here since it is the RV package. From what I have read the marine unit is different in it's coverage and how it operates. Still unclear if it operates on the 2nd phase units or not because of the lasers it uses to pass off the signal. Or if phase two sat's are just laser equipped. Not much out to explain this at this point.
It is the same satellite constellation. The issue as I see it becomes when a user station transitions from one coverage area to another in an active state. So looking at the map that @ocgrant references we find also the maritime map is the same from a satellite aspect and to travel from Ft Lauderdale to Gun Cay you would cross several areas and actually loose connectivity for a portion of that trip as there is no coverage - yet.
For the RV'ers they take down move then set back up to stay within the contract obligation they have with Starlink and there is a monthly additional cost to do that.
Now if Grant uses his system in Ft Lauderdale then in preparation for a trip to the Bahamas he turns it off then when he arrives to destination and reactivates the system, he would be no different than what is allowed for an additional fee.
This is why I am thinking we are a couple of years out for both active mobile and completing the constellation of satellites so that active mobile feature can be used.

As an Edit as I see Grant has clarified - he should be good to go as long as he correctly registers his product.

But look at the featured product's on this site: https://mri-denver.com/ $85.
Yes I looked at that but it is for a 1 1/2" pole, I can't find a pole base that would work for my application that looks "marine" like. I went ahead and ordered the other one on Etsy which turns out is from this company MRI also. It at least fits a marine antenna base. I might have to "beef up" the base with added stainless foot print as specs I found show dishy weighing 9 pounds. Now I think that may be with their portable base so not sure unit I get it but 9 lbs is a lot I think for that mount when you factor in wind, pitch and roll pounding underway.

I cut a piece of plywood last night 12x19 to simulate "dishy" and will head to the boat today to play with orientation and mounting ideas. The more I stare at my boat through my security cameras looking at where to put this and not look stupid the more I think I will just pull the damn dome off. It doesn't work worth a crap anyway as it is the older SD version so pretty much useless in the Bahamas.

Does anyone think the rv version will work inside a KVH dome?
I like the idea of keeping the antenna and associated electronics out of the wind/weather/etc

"Dishy" as it's called is way to big for that. It's 20" x 12" and moves around. Although there are a few that have just taken the motors out and mounted it flat because of how it looks.

EDIT: You would need a minimum of a 24" diameter dome and about the same in height. Like the TV7 and that $1500 for the dome and $500 to ship. Crazy.

Thanks @SKybolt
I have the KVH HD7.
Will check the size... dishy... :)

Yeah found an article about the gen 2 satellites, there not in orbit yet. https://www.cnet.com/science/space/...k-satellites-are-too-big-for-current-rockets/

What package/ equipment etc are you guys purchasing? Are you integrating with the peplink or does this system have its own router/switch? I would love it if the Starlink could be the WAN connection outside of cell coverage and have everything fail over as 1 service becomes unusable.

The RV package and it has it's own router, completely independent and separate from the Peplink. If this is as good as it seems the Peplink can be uninstalled.

While the portable piece of the contract is an additional $25 a month, there is nothing stopping you from using it while underway. Doing so will only void the warranty of the dish. They state the equipment is not meant for a moving vehicle/boat. So permanently mounting the dish by default will void the warranty, nothing stopping you from using it underway. At least it isn't written anywhere I could find. I think once the FCC granted mobility the exception for using it while moving was null and void.

From their website:
  • No In-Motion Use: We do not support Starlink use in motion at this time. Using the Starlink Kit in motion will void the limited warranty of your Kit. While our teams are actively working to make it possible to use Starlink on moving vehicles (e.g., automobiles, RVs, boats), Starlink is not yet configured to be safely used in this way.

I had read somewhere maybe old news that they you will pay a fine or get your account shut down. Now warranty void.
Here is a good article on the Portability vs RV accounts and how they work -

Yeah it is so confusing with the FCC just recently allowing Starlink to be mobile. I also read that somewhere as well and can't find it again. Now there web site has changed a bit to the warranty being voided on the equipment. I think they are doing that because they know no one is going to listen to them on not using while in motion now that mobility has been approved.

Interesting set of videos on a trawler install. Apparently dishy will work just fine with motors removed and laid flat. Getting there involved a 3D milling machine however.

Saw these, great video on this, but also great idea on how to mount this thing.

@ocgrant Grant you may be interested in the FB group for this stuff https://www.facebook.com/groups/709675250055589

They are posting pic's of dome 's that supposedly work. This pic is off of that group, they are also posting marine mounts etc.

Not at all what I expected. Looks like two independent terminals, albeit larger phased arrays, but no evidence of particular hardening for maritime use. For the price I imagined domes would be included.

Those can't be the maritime setup. Video has got to be bogus.

Apparently it is. This video provides some good analysis of Starlink Maritime. Apparently it's going to be cost-effective for commercial maritime users. The hardware is more robust than I supposed and there's also a no-cost upgrade to a flat-panel projected for early next year.
