I have this vhf that i only used 1 month before i realized i got wrong model, this has no gps. So its made to hook up to another gps device. I can’t explain, look it up. So i bought the GX1400GPS model with built in gps to replace it and i put on my boat. So i have this thing sitting in a box that i cant use and it just going to waste. I need to pull out my MMSI number from it which is a HUGE PITA. I have no idea what a nearly new $130 vhf is worth. If anyone interested toss me a PM, offer a price, then i will be motivated to extract the MMSI #. And ship. The manual hasnt even been cracked open. It really is brand new.
PS. Thing worked fine but after i put in the MMSI #, because it had no gps signal an alarm starts screaming every 10 mins saying it cant find location, so either dont enter an MMSI or hook up to another gps device like a chart plotter. There is a ton of internet info about this that i didnt know before i bought.

For those who don’t know what Pirate is referring to, it’s Digital Selective Calling, aka DSC, which enables the Distress button located under a flap on the face of your VHF or on the backside of the mic. If your VHF has this, then let’s increase your safety and get it configured. If yours is more than 20 years old/doesn’t have DSC it should be replaced. The good news is that a barely-used one just came on the market, and it comes with free (limited) tech support from me to attach it to your VHF/plotter!

I’m a fan of the SH 1400GX. They’re a great value with lots of features and a very user-friendly interface.

Pirate, thanks for fully-enabling DSC. It makes YOU safer, but it also makes boats around you more safe.

I wouldn’t think that a pre-programmed VHF would have much resale value because regulations intentionally make it difficult to reset an MMSI number (most units must be sent or taken to a service center). However, Standard Horizon units have a feature to accept a special reset code to allow end-users to perform a reset. I don’t know anyone who has tried it, so I’m curious to know if/how it works. In fact, if you don’t want to bother with it, you can PM your serial and MMSI numbers to me and I’ll request a reset code for you.

I talked to SH. Need to hook it to a 12v source, then in the menu extract a code, email it back to them and they will send the reset code. Instructions at home. Been too lazy to do since i wasnt sure what i was going to do with this thing.
Thanks for the offer.

Your reply is interesting. I would think the serial number is on the back. But the number they want requires me to get from the menu. Not home so cant look at what they sent me.

Depending on where you got your MMSI number from (ie BoatUS) you can just transfer the ID to the new owners and get a new one for your new unit.

I’m only quoting the manual - no first-had experience with this. I’d be inclined to believe recent instructions from customer service over a manual printed who-knows-when!

Do you have a jumper pack? I’ve found that to be the easiest way to power-up 12v devices at home.

I have a spare boat battery that i can hook it to. Boat came with 2 starting batts; I replaced one with deep cycle so i have a spare.

I looked at the email from SH. Its not the serial number. If i go into menu its called a ‘request code’. Thats what I need to give them. Anyway, it dont seem like anyone interested, shame. I dont give a dam about the money, shame to have a nearly new vhf nobody wants.
i dont live too far from the bay. Maybe I’ll put a antenna on house, hook it up to my spare battery and listen to the boaters.

Ok folks: If your VHF doesn't have a distress button but you have a reasonably-decent plotter, here's your opportunity to increase the safety of your boat and as well as the boats around you at a very low cost.

Please step up!

Remember, this very lightly used unit comes with free online tech support to get a few simple wires connected. (a few simple wires and a little red button that could save your life.)

Here are here the NMEA-0183 color codes for the GX1400. I've had very good luck finding the plotter side online, so if the buyer tells me the make/model of theirs, I can post that too.

I'd be interested, since I only have my handheld unit. I'll have to look if I can/what it would take to connect to my Humminbird Helix 5.

Humminbird is one of the more challenging mfr's to get instructions from, so it may be best to give them a call before committing to a VHF that's dependent on external position data.

I did find this regarding the Helix 5. (I'm often un-sure that the Humminbird manual I find online actually relates to the unit I'm looking for)

If this applies to yours, I'd say that you'll connect:

Helix White -----> SH VHF Yellow
Helix Black ------> SH VHF Green

Please "check my math"!

Son flew back to CA today, will try remove MMSI tomorrow.CNY, give me a day. And i will honestly tell you i have no idea how to connect to other equipment. Defer to RC for that.
I am more honest than Abe. Wouldnt scam you, no way, but i don’t know a lot about this electric stuff. Frankly i ain’t looking for a dime. If you can use, I’ll give you the thing, just reimburse me the shipping cost. Once you get though, i cant help you hook it up.

It looks like NMEA is available on the Gen4 but I have a Generation 3 unit. Sorry for the delay on getting to you.

Bummer. Glad you checked! So, the model Pirate bought after this one is also a candidate for you. Look for a Standard Horizon GX1400G (or GPS). They come in black or white, so if there's a W or B in the model number, that denotes the color. They can be had for less than $170.

We'll need to set you up with an MMSI number, but that's easy and free.

View attachment 110925 Had no takers. I'm 5 miles from Bay as the crow flies. May mount VHF on house and use as a base station. Ya, i know its illegal.

It's illegal, but not "as much" as it once was - you're only a few miles beyond a new exception for land-based use. About 4-5 years ago, the FCC loosened those rules in hopes of encouraging more VHF usage.

A marine VHF radio can be used (tx and rx) if it's within 3 miles of the body of water and used for legit boating (safety/navigation etc) purposes.

Maybe I should just buy it though. I still have quite a few dock neighbors to setup and some of them have non-DSC units, so I'm sure I could just resell it to further my cause.
