Can anyone tell me about the Salt Creek area in St. Pete? Good rec. boating, entertainment, marinas, easy access via road/boat, etc.? Nice marinas in the area?

Thanks in advance.

I don't know it, but a co-worker is a St Pete cracker. He says don't go inland (day or night), and after dark, keep your Glock loaded, stay on your boat, and stay alert.

In essence, this is the rough part of St Pete, and you don't want to be there if you don't have to.

Again, this is from a guy that lives in St Pete. I don't go down to that part of downtown. Lots of cool stuff on the north end of downtown, but the south end is a bad place.

ditto on ylwjacket's comments;

you are are right on the border of South Saint Pete which is not a great place to be, definately the poorer section of town, which also means higher crime rates.

if you're coming via boat head to downtown tampa for the night life or stay out on the bairrer islands if you want the beach life. Nothing really worth going to downtown Saint Pete for....

My 2 cents...

Tphinney -

Spoken like a Tampan! As a Pinellas resident, I would say there is lots to do in downtown St Pete, and downtown Tampa is lame.

Be that as it may, the action in downtown St Pete is about 8 blocks north of the Salt Creek area. If you go by dinghy from there to downtown, you're probably OK. If you walk it, you're probably in trouble.

There are 2 'high end' marinas in the area???? The Harborage and Sailors Wharf. I wonder how they combat the undesirable location?

I appreciate the feedback. I'm just trying to get a feel for the area.

thanks,

Saint Pete Marina - put in some new transiant docking with money from a federal grant to try to draw in more folks to visit the area, but thats on the north side of the pier I think.

You would think the city would install some docks at the pier itself for boaters.

There is docking at the Pier. You can pull up and tie up.

The high end marinas, I believe, are a little north of the Salt Creek area. As with any city, 4-6 blocks can be the difference between the right and wrong side of the tracks.

The water is where the water is. Right along the water, or in the water, there may be some nice stuff. You get 2 blocks off the water, especially in south St Pete, and you are in a bad place.

We went to St. Pete Municipal marina last Saturday from Little Harbor. The marina (just south of the pier) is $1 per hour with 6-hour limit for transients. We enjoyed the sunset on our way there and ate at Del Frescos overlooking the marina. Took lots of time just hanging out then shot straight back across the bay around 9pm. There are lots of great restaurants within walking distance from the marina. We'll be there again soon as it's so easy to navigate.

I assume that since the Vinoy finally got rebuilt that it is now private? I had some luck with transient reservations there when they first opened up. Probably pricey, but you could leave the keys in the ignition.
