I'm going to St. Michaels for the day on Monday and wanted to know where is the best place to dock. I have a dink, so am I better off tying up to a mooring or dropping anchor? Also, what's a good restaurant for a lunch?

B-
There are no public moorings in St. Michaels (that I am aware of), so the hook may be the way to go. There is an anchorage just outside the harbor and/or around in the cove in front of the Maritime Museum. St. Michaels Marina offers hourly dockage, which they are somewhat stingy with but you shouldn't have a problem on a Monday. This is first come, first served and is driven by their available slips. If I were you, i would anchor. It's a great place to dinghy around anyway.

As far as lunch, there is only one restaurant on the water: The Crab Claw. That's where I'd go. There are lots of restaurants in St. Michaels, but if you want to be on the water, the "Claw" is the only way to go. They only take cash.

Have fun!

You can't beat St. Michaels! For my money, the best bet is to stay at the St. Michaels Marina. It's well worth the cost to be able to step off your boat and be in town 2 blocks later. No messing with the dink. We've tried virtually all of the restaurants, some multiple times. By far our favorite is the St Michaels Crab and Steak House, right there in the St. Michaels Marina. You can walk farther for a meal, but you won't get a better one!

I agree that the St. Michaels Crab and Steak House has great food... I think it is much better (i.e. crabcakes) than the Crab Claw...

I think the Crab Claw now takes credit cards... that changed in 2007... unless they've stopped it now.

Thanks guys for the response. I would prefer to anchor and take the dinghy in for the experience. Are there places to tie the dinghy up in town, like Annapolis has at the end of Ego Alley?

Another option is Higgins Boat Yard, at the foot of Carpenter Street. Less expensive than others and close to everything. Nice people and adequate bathhouses, but no frills.

I forgot about that place... they do have good food!

Yes, and try the Chilean Sea Bass and did I see Gary recommending the crab cakes? They allow dogs on the deck area and we have gone there so much all the waitresses know our dog’s name and give her water and treats. They don’t make the same fuss over me and also don’t know my name either.

The dinghy dock next to the Crab Claw is free

The Crab and Steak House is suprizingly good. Nothing like Leslies farting manequin! (doubt I spelled that right)

But in my opinion the Crab Claw or Steak House are not as good as 208 Talbet. Fantastic restaurant worth the couple block walk into town.

Well just got back from St. Michaels and what a great place, not many boaters there today. Dropped anchor right inside and the harbor and took the dink in. Walked around town and ate at the Crab and Steak House. Fueled up at the St.Michaels marina and met the owner Mike, really nice guy and headed home. Water was smooth and the weather was perfect. Thanks everyone for you help on making this a great day!

Had lunch there Sunday, very good Cajun Tuna sandwich

Did you see the mannequin?

Another new place in St. Michael's I tried this past weekeing is Ava's . Awesome Shrimp and Tomato Pasta dish (thansk for the recommendation Josh!), great home made chips, awesome pizza, and killer wine selection.

We ate dinner one night at Ava's over Labor day weekend and agree that places was great. It's on the list for next time.

We anchored out with friends over the weekend, but on the back side of St. Michaels (made for a shorter boat trip). We anchored in San Domingo Creek, nice quite easy dinghy into the fisherman's wharf. Had kayaks and there is a little island for the kids to explore near the anchorage. Anywhere along that 7' to 12' of water is nice. http://www.charts.noaa.gov/OnLineViewer/12266.shtml

There's also a great gourmet pizza place, Ava's on Talbot St. The parmesan potato chips are terrific. A dozen friends of ours descended upon the place a few weeks back and we had pretty much one of everything on the menu. ALL of it was great. Not the typical Eastern Shore cuisine but really good.

And if you anchor out, be SURE you've got a good bite on it. If the wind picks up it's very easy to get pulled loose.

So the fisherman's wharf allows dinghys to dock? It looks like a pretty easy walk into town. Might try that next time!

Yes they do and it's about just about 2 blocks to town. Just keep within the channel working your way back to the anchorage after that Green "5" through Green "3" it gets shallow quick on both sides. :thumbsup:Enjoy.
