I have a 2006 240 Sundeck...just recently the stereo will randomly make a pop sound, similar to when you plug in a jack to the aux plug, but this occurs from all sources when it is on, ie. radio, ipod plugged into aux, etc....it occurs even if the boat is not moving and is completely still...the 'pop' sound is throughout the speaker system, so I suspect is in not wiggling loose speaker wire, but something perhaps with the stereo or amp ...
Again, it just randomly occurs and can be quite annoying, like a static pop...

Thoughts on how to even diagnose it?

David

as a side note, the popping started a few trips ago, and just today the 12 volt outlet suddenly stopped working..it worked fine to plug in a air pump early in the day, and then an hour later, plugged it back in and nothing at all...it is definitely the outlet, as it did not work when I plugged in a canister vac also..

I'd investigate ground wires first, a faulty ground will cause / allow interference to a stereo and cause popping like that. If your ground has started to fail, it could affect the closed circuit for the outlet. Just a wild guess.

How easy is that to investigate?

Any chance this is related to the 12 volt going out as well?

Thanks

david

I'm assuming that it's a marine / auto type stereo like on most boats this era. If so it runs off 12 volts with a standard red black connection and a standby wire that may or may not be connected.

The standby wire will be yellow and if nothing has been changed since the boat was produced, it will be connected. But I agree that the first step is to check/remove/clean grounds, including battery connections.

12v outlet - did you check the fuse? While not directly related to each other, the root cause (possible dirty/bad grounds) could cause both issues.

Excellent....everything is original, no modifications, just started happening...didn't have a chance to check the fuse today...I assume they are in the storage area where the electronics are located for the stereo, etc...

I will plan on investigating it Friday, so thank you for the help..I was concerned that my amp or stereo was going bad...

Well, it could be that, too. But checking grounds is always a good first step in diagnosing electrical gremlins.

How old are the batteries?
