Speedometer Gauge strange happenings?

My 2004 340 DA speedometer gauge and the Smartcraft speed readout doesn't work Unless I turn on my Raymarine SL Chartplotter, is this normal behavior? The boat is new to me this season so have nothing to compare to.

Yup, The Smartcraft speed (SOG) course (COG), Depth, cross track error (XTE), location and waypoint data are all provided by the Raymarine chartplotter. I'm not sure about depth as depth did not come through when we had the RL 70 CRC plotter, but does on the C80.
