It looks like I'm going to need to replace my thru-hull depth/temp transducer. Just wondering if anyone has experience and if there are any special instructions (i.e. procedure, tools, lube for seals/o-rings.etc.). Thanks for any input!

I haven't done this so I wont give you any replacement process advice (although there are other threads here about it). My sea water temp part is broke but the depth still works fine. So rather than go with the $200+ full sensor replacement, I bought a $30 IR thermometer which I keep right at the helm with me. Works just as well for the sea water temperature and a whole bunch of other as needed temperature readings. If you still have depth, that's an option.

Thanks for your reply ZZ13. Unfortunately, I've lost depth and temp. If only temp I really wouldn't care. I just need to know if there are any procedures I need to watch for during replacement. Thanks again!

Its like a plug, you unscrew the collar ring, pull out the transducer "insert" then put the new one in and tighten. As I recall there is an O ring made in to the outside of the ducer assembly so make sure that goes back in nicely and does not get pulled out of alignment.

Don't recommend changing it in the water although it has been known to have been done that way before.

You should not need to replace the mounting flange unless it is leaking. That is a whole nother project within itself.

Thanks Jason78.

Do you know if there is any particular lubricant recommended for the o-ring seal before assembly into the flange? I'll definitely be doing the change out of the water, easy as boat hangs on the boat lift in boathouse. I would never feel comfortable trying that change in the water -- I can imagine all kinds of ways for that to go wrong!

Thanks again for your response and if you know about lubing the o-ring I'd appreciate knowing what to use.

As I recall, mine has some kind of lubricant smeared on it from the factory. It has been several years so I can't be certain but I think when you remove the transducer from the flange it is shipped in, you will see it has already been applied. Not sure what you would use if you wanted to add some. I am sure an auto parts store has something that wont eat the o-ring. You may want to give the OEM Manufacturer, Airmar, a call to ask.
