Looking to change out the speakers I have on my boat. The stock speakers are the Panasonics. The faceplate is approximately 7.5 inches wide. I want to replace with the JL M770 but it looks like they might just be a little to big. The spec sheet says they are 7.7 inches which looks like it might not fit the opening in the side panel. has anyone replaced their stock speaker with the JL is the vinyl paded area? what mods did you have to make.

I did buy one pair of Rockford Fosgate M162C which fit but I'm not sure I'm happy with them. Does anyone have these and they are happy?

Here is the pick of the speaker cut out. One diameter might be nearly 8 inches but others might be only 7.5 inches.

Any ideas or suggestions would be appreciated.

I replaced mine with the 770s last month. However I don't have the padded location like you do. The 770s do require a larger cutout. All the specs with the cutout dimensions, depth, faceplate width etc for the M770s are here: http://marine.jlaudio.com/products_components.php?prod_id=421 There is a 650, too which is a bit smaller. Check those specs.

I'm very happy with mine, but yes I had to enlarge the hole. Can't help on your padding situation though...
