Being this is the first boat I have owned that I could spend the night on I was wondering where do most people spend the night? I have a slip and not a mooring so does anyone spend the night at their slips or do you find some secluded safe areas, drop anchor, put lights up and spend the night? My boat is in a slip in Center Moriches if anyone has any hot spots for overnight stays in the area. Thanks.

Overnight question

Maybe the original title of my post was misleading. I am more looking for information on what you guys and gals do as far as locations to spend the night (mooring, slip, secluded safe area...etc). The question about south shore LI places was just a follow up but not critical. I am just trying to understand the best way and best places to spend the night on the boat.

Drop anchor in a cove....Stay at a marina...Sleep at your home port. It is all good. Part of the fun of boating is finding what works for you.

We live on an island where everywhere is the "hot spot"

I have spent a lot of time finding places to anchor near the "Hot spots" where you don't have to pay large docking fees. It would be nice to have a "Member approved" list of places, where to Anchor.
I will give you one to start. Looking for a "Wild Place?"
Flynns Fire Island. NY. Enter through "Schooners" located next to flynns ( also a cool place to go) The cost to Dock: $100 at Flynns per night.
Where to anchor? Just West of Flynns and Dingy in or even "wade in" you go through Schooners. They post a $5 "Drop off charge" but I have never been charged. :) Or there is a Private Basin just East of Flynns where you can also dingy in and there is a Deli right there! Fresh Bakery goods each morning ( watch for 7 AM. ferry)
Nice.
Looking for a good spot in Sag Harbor now / Shelter Island / Greenport

I am a fan of Watch Hill. Nice protected marina, some significant insects @ dusk.....Some of my friends anchor in the mouth of the Connetequot River and tender it to the Restaurants right there. Todd

:) Here we go, its nice to share.
Your not talking about "Watch Hill" on Fire Island. http://www.watchhillfi.com/marina.html
Now that would be one Hell of a Dingy Ride across the entire Great South Bay and where would I get the gas to get back for the Dingy....
We have spent many a night at the " Riverview" Also a great place on the Connetequot River:thumbsup:
Anyone can add?? JG.

John - There is another Watch Hill in the GSB? I frequent Watch Hill on FI, I'm not aware of the other. Do you have a picture or map of where in the river it is?

PMC, No other "Watch Hill" that I know about. ( updated my post) Watch Hill! You mean watch you don't get ran over by a Ferry. There is a place to anchor right to the west of Watch hill" No reason to cross the GSB ): This is not turning out the way I thought...John G.

No worries John. Yeh get out of the way of the ferry. He ALWAYS has the right of way. I'm in the river and I see almost weekly somebody pissing off the ferry operator. Its the revving sound of a diesel engine that catches my attention. You know, how you have to slam in reverse to slow down 100K# of steel ship :wow::wow:

That area, just west of of the marina is nice. There is a sand bar, where you can toss a stern anchor and almost walk off the swim platform to the beach.

Pretty sure he was talking about two separate favorite anchorages - Connetequot river, where you anchor out and tender to the restaurants (although Riverview has it's own slips), and Watch Hill, as a separate trip.

Sailors Haven is a nice spot too.

Thanks Keith,
That's exactly what I was saying. C'mon guys, WTF? If you read the first two posts on the thread Rock , as a newbie, was asking where people spend the night. I offered 2 spots, one a slip and one a mooring!!! It's that simple!! I re-read my post and still don't know how you come up with mooring at WH and tendering across the bay???:smt101 Todd

Ok, I see the problem. It was the use of "..."
What does ... at the end of a sentence mean?
The three dots are called an ellipsis, and they stand for words left out. At the end of a sentence, they indicate that the thought is not completed, often with the suggestion that the readers can supply the missing words for themselves.

I'm going to sit back and see where this shakes out...

Hey, Save your Popcorn. No issue here. It looks like one sentence regarding one area. I maybe wrong ( not the first time) I thought the restaurant was the one at Watch Hill on Fire Island. I spent a lot of time looking for another "Watch Hill" I would like to know the Restaurant. I have spent a lot of time on Connetquot River at the "Riverview" - "The Snapper-inn" -and the Oakdale Yacht Club.
All Good :)

has anyone tried a Friday at the River View on the Connetquot river. I called them and they said there was a $100 charge, but $50 was credited toward meals and your favorite beverages. So in a way they get you for $50 to dock. Just was wondering how the location was and the evening events

Friday happy hour at the riverview during summer is alot of fun (as long as the weather is good). The outside deck is pretty packed, and if you can get your boat on the east side of the dock your boat is right in front of party central. The few times I have gone I have taken a bunch of people and everyone kicking in a few bucks is no more expensive than the cover charge at the door.

The $50 extra charge just started last year ( ok, over night) They did not charge before then. All do to multiple boats showing up with jerks drinking there own booze and not even trying to hide it ):
Fridays is is the better night for the older crowds, Sundays are also good. My friend is there most friday nights, also a Searay owner 39ft named "Come Monday, it'll be all right." Stop by and say hey, Not tonight its a "Lombardis on the bay" night. No docking but great Happy Hour with a Band. John G
