South Shore Help

August works for me as far as which day or week it doesn't matter I just need a few weeks in advance to take the day:thumbsup: I would think weekdays would be better like a Monday or Tuesday as it would be less crowded and it would be easier for everyone to get a spot:smt038 and Watch Hill looks like as good a place as any and they have what looks like a nice dock

Here's the site I found http://www.watchhillfi.com/

My tentative date is first week of august. I actually had an idea of having CSR NJ & LI Rendezvous in the event if I’ll have my local CSR friends would come along for the trip. Couple of them had expressed their interest, but since I started my thread during the holidays people are just too busy with other things. So, as the things settle down and we go back to planning board we’ll know better how things are unfolding. Of course, it’s more difficult for me to plan this, b/c I’m travelling to a totally new area. So, any suggestions from you LI guys are welcomed. Here’s my preliminary plan from this thread The Long Island Loop – Points of Interest:

NJ to Westhampton (~85-90nm) with lunch stop at Fire Island.
Westhampton to Greenport (~25nm), stopping at Shelter Island for lunch.
Greenport to Montauk (~20nm)
Montauk to Fire Island (~55nm)
Fire Island to NJ (~60nm)

I was thinking that getting together would be better in Shelter Island, but it looks like I'll be there on a Monday, providing I start my trip from NJ on Sunday. So, depending on how things develep I could move my days around. If the Rendezvous will happen and most people will vote for a weekend day, then I'll need to plan my trip accordingly.

Sunday or Monday would work for me. If a raft were planned Shelter or 3 mile harbor is great. If a dock, Westhampton or Greenport. But I am open.

The phone # on the watch Hill link above actually is the tower #. You can call there early am to reserve a spot for the day. You will need to provide a credit card # as they will bill you weather or not you make it there. They take reservations until I believe 50% of the slips are taken then its first come first served.
Thanks

I didn't really read the rest of the posts after the first - so i apologize - however i grew up in Eat Moriches - a nothing town in the 70's and 80's with only fishing, clamming and a coasty station as well as duck farms. I also went to West Hampton Beach H.S. and the South Shore LI and especially the waters are forever ingrained into my mind....

If you are comming from Mystic - then go through Plum Gut and go to Greenport for first night - if you are part of a Yacht Club - then go across the way to Shelter Island Dering Harbor and Shelter Island Yacht Club - bring a blazer - like being in the 50's - a total hoot - classy place - - local liquor / wine shop closes early - on one trip i just made it - to the delight of the shop keeper because i bought a hundred buck of wine, rum and other stuff....

After that go to Coecles Harbor - entrance at south end of Shelter Is. - after inside - go to left and drop hook - BEST swimming hole on east coast - - good camp out spot too. Gas dock deep up the harbor....

then make your way to Sag Harbor - do some shopping - may be stay the night - then go to Peconic Bay - very pretty - best fishing - - - take Shinnecock Canal to get to Shinnecok Bay - not much here except access to ocean and bays further west. first being Moriches Bay - a shallow fishing bay then there is the Great South Bay - great fishing however Fire Island has some nice towns to pull into - like Ocean Beach .. .. but that is a trip and a half...

Most likely - depending on time - after Sag Harbor you'll want to go to Montauk Harbor then Block Is. (which is only 12 miles from Montauk)

if you have any questions please ask away....

Fire Island....i had a house share there for 7 years and sailed extensively throughout the Great South Bay for 7 years prior to that... when coming from the east - then i would suggest a night at Sailor's Haven - which is part of the Fire Island National Sea Shore - they have a small marina, bay side beach, ocean beach w/ lifeguards, a snack shack, ranger station with hiking trails in Sunken Forest (Absolutely a REALLY COOL place - as the holly forest is so dense that it is a nice escape from summer sun and heat as well as rain) there are showers, bathrooms and a 45 min. 80min. w/ kids walk WEST on the beach brings you to civilization. A 15 min. walk EAST brings you to Cherry Grove - like the West Village threw up on the beach complete with the Village People - good restaurants and fun people watching. You'll know you are in cherry grove when you start seeing nude sunbathers - just pick a stair/path over the dunes and walk into town.

West of Sailors Haven are the following towns Point-O-Woods (exclusive gated community owned by church) separated by 20' chain link fence from Ocean Bay Park (meat heads), Sea View (quiet except for the meat heads passing through to get to bars), Ocean Beach (all of the restaurants turn into bars/clubs at night) lively, shopping and part of "The Land of NO" as it is part of the Town of Islip - no biking, blading, eating, drinking (water) on any walkways...etc... after that there are several towns one of which being Atlantique which is one big marina - - all of the towns are very small and residential - until you get to the western most town - Kismet (Land of House Parties) as there is not much to do here except at the 2 bar-restaurants next door to each other one called the IN and the other called the OUT. beyond that is Robert Moses State Park not my favorite place - however there is a nudie beach between Kismet and Robert Moses however is mostly dudes.

Sea View Marina is gated and secure. Ocean Beach Marina is not so secure - however i have not been back in 5 years and may have changed. Atlantique is off the radar of meat heads and a good spot with family.

along the south shore of the mainland - with the exception of West Sayville - there is not much there worth visiting - in fact i would stay on F.I. side of things - - however map out gas docks and provisioning places as F.I. is home to the $7 bagel (that was 1998 too) - - Charts are very important - all of the bays are shallow - and it is common for the Great South Bay to lick up 4' plus waves in a blow as the fetch is 5 miles from mainland... bottom conditons vary from mud to grassy to sandy - - a spare anchor is a must with currents and boat chop and maybe a kicker and a winch to kedge off sand bars in the middle of the bay. careful of ferries - they are nice but mean business - unlike the Shelter Island Ferries (both north shore and south) will run you over.

again good luck - if i offended anyone - please accept apologies -

oh - i forgot about Davis Park - a town near the eastern part of F.I. - but then so does everyone else. :)

after getting through the shinnecock canal you are in Suffolk county so look at the Suffolk part of jrock1062's link.

ALL of the east end of LI and including Shelter Island, Plum Island and Fishers Island are part of Suffolk County - Suffolk starts in Amityville in the west on the south shore and Huntington in the west on the north shore

Looking for a party atmosphere at Fire Island is easy.
There is pleanty to do at Fire island depending on your wallet.
I believe one of the wildest Bar that you can bring your boat to / near by is Flynns.
They have a dock but its not cheap and can be rough at times ( Jusy like most of Fire island there is little full protected areas) If you have a Dingy (or swim /wade ) you can Anchor just West of the dock and Go to / thru Scooners another good bar, Scooners somtimes charges a $5 Drop of fee during prime times and than Walk over to Flynns. The Bar Does get a little Young at Prime times, Such as Sat Night.
The Town to check-out is Ocean Beach if its your first time, its call the Land of No. No Eating / Drinking ect. in public with pleanty of Bars and Resturants with Nice hotels if you have the $300 to $500 for the nice ones.

Flynn's and Schooners are virtual drunken Pirate Ships with 2 girls huddling in the corner on Friday tru Sunday Happy Hour filled with dees, dems and does - - unless there is a dead head band at Schooners then the welcomed groups tend to come in. NOT family places - loud, obnoxious and tough place to be.

i agree - Ocean Beach is a good destination.

Coming in from the NE I assume I would travel inside? if so I am concerned with the Moriches.
I am thinking about leaving Mystic on a Friday afternoon, stop in Greenport two nights then Sunday head to Westhampton, stay two nights then move to Atlantique for 4 nights then to Sag overnight Saturday and back in Mystic on Sunday.
I suppose it would not make sense to travel outside if I was stopping in Westhampton right? Are the Moriches that big a deal that I should avoid Westhampton and travel outside? Are there any other navigation issues traveling inside?

stay inside - as the weather can change rather quickly - and if you ever have a problem - you can't pull into a marina if you are out in the ocean. get an eldridge - plum gut rips 9 knots, off of robins island and nassau point there are weird currents as well as some of the other inlets - - Moriches Inlet BTW - is not well marked like Shinnecock and Jones Inlet - and is prone to shoaling - BIG TIME.

One more thing regarding the Fire Island Ferries is that it is true that you don't want to get in there way its the easy way to go from the south shore of long Island & Fire Island, just follow them back and forth. There are some routes at low tide which if you don't plan will force you to back-track.

count us in for a south shore trip, we would love to meet other owners/ families any day is fine! (we like fire island ). but are open
would kids be invited,,,,,, etc?

Joe,
I'm not sure if the question was addressed to me or Russ (it's his thread), but in all of the raftups and/or trips I have attended kids were always welcomed. I'm travelling as a family of four with daughter (13) and son (5).

By all means, everyone is welcome- our kids (20) and (23) have more important things to do than hang with us :smt089 so we will be just two but my wife says I am the third child  So lets play! (if you were addressing me).
Regarding the threads, Alex, I more or less stepped on your toe not knowing you had a similar thread going already (unintentional). You have been most helpful and I consider this a group effort and community property. :smt038 I hope we can formalize this, make some solid plans for a raft and I look forward to meeting you and others that have also been so helpful.

I think we were looking at Shelter Island for Sunday or Monday? Or were you leaning more towards the South Shore somewhere? Or both? What do you think? I would like to plan where/when the most people are able to join. Or we could plan both areas and announce it, those that can make it - come.

Hey Russ & Alex. I haven't jumped in on this thread in a while but I'd love to hook up with you guys on the south shore somewhere if it works out for you. I pretty much make my schedule so I am open. Probably will have the kids ( boys 4 1/2 & 6, and my daughter if the wife can get off) If not I would prob leave her behind as she is only 2 y/o. I will keep monitoring to see what you come up with. Todd

Russ,
I think that both of our threads are focused on details of our trips, so for the purpose of meeting our CSR friends we might be better off starting new thread dedicated to the event, something like “Long Island Rendezvous 2010”. We can propose those two options that you had mentioned:

1- Raft-up at Shelter Island
2- Get together at desired marina on South Shore (We’ll need some place that can accommodate the group)

As for the dates, we had preliminary Aug 8th (Sunday), which looks like a good date since it’s on a weekend. If we’ll move it to a weekday some people might not be able to make it. If we’ll have more votes for a marina, then Atlantique Marina on Aug 13th (Friday) is the only possible time/place I can see us crossing.

What you think? Any other ideas?

Sounds great, Todd. Keep an eye on the updates for the time and place.
