Sound Shield on a 260DA?

Does anyone know if you can put a Kohler Sound Shield around a 5E Kohler generator? And if so - if possible in a 260DA? It looks pretty roomy around the generator. Thanks.

Really?! Interesting. I just actually heard back from Sea Ray and the guy said there wasn't room for it, being why they didn't install it at the factory. Was yours from the factory or after-market? If so who installed it? It seems to me it fits pretty snugly around the unit...have you any photos of your engine room? Sorry for all of the questions. I was about to figure out how many sound tiles I could glue around that area for some amount of noise reduction.

Thanks a lot!

Ok, a completely different boat, but I also did not have a sound shield and Sea Ray said the shield would not fit. So I looked at the area, the shield, what do you know, it fit (barely). Point is, get the specs for the sound shield, a tape measure and check it out.

@ultratiger89 - yes, I'm aware of the cost. That thing is loud though...and if there is a solution designed for it which it seems there may be, $1500 is worth it to me.

@SR400DB - that's good advice, thanks. I have a message in at Kohler asking about dimensions etc. Thanks.

$1500 was definitely worth it for us, we also upgraded the entire genny exhaust system on our boat to reduce the noise.

just curious if you knew, that sounds like a lot of money for what you're getting. wonder why yours is so loud? I can barely hear mine even at night. granted, if I'm in the aft berth I can hear a hum, but it's not enough to keep me awake.

also, I would think you could buy some of that stuff they put on the outside of a house before they brick it or put siding on and make your own.

I just checked the Kohler Pocket Guide and the specs are listed as: Housed vs Unhoused so I'm assuming housed means in the case/shield. Length housed is 30.4in and unhoused is 28.4in, width housed is 18.1in and unhoused 15.2 and height housed is 18.0in and unhoused 16.9in. So to me that says I need an extra two inches on the length, an extra three inches on width and an extra one inch on height.

Does that sound about right? I'm thinking I should have enough room for those extra inches. That isn't much.

BTW - thanks for that link @ultratiger89. Question - is there anywhere you can buy these things where you can see what you're buying? I can't find any good or useful info on this thing anywhere. Its always like the link you sent...as if I'm ordering some odd part only available in the back of the catalog by number. Seems crazy for a $1500 sound shield.

@ultratiger89 - I don't know really how loud or quiet it should be. Its from 2001 I'm assuming, the year of my boat. We can definitely hear it in the vberth. We're nightime movie watchers, and not yet having a tv installed we've been using my Mac laptop to watch movies. Its barely loud enough to hear over the generator. And I'm certain the generator is running properly, it has been well maintained, I have all the receipts saying so. (this boat is new to us this season). Our generator is about as loud as the 496 engine.

I thought about fabricating one too...but I'm not much with metal. And frankly - I'm a web designer and I do a lot of freelance work and that type of work is well overpriced...I just need to do one job and I'll make that dough to buy one, and not have the little lady bark about the cost!

fwiw, I can barely hear mine running, and have had many people comment on how quiet it is, it's mounted on the starboard side of the engine compartment.

It looks like you have the sound shield.....which would be the reason it is so quiet

limitedwave,

Mine looks just like yours and is in the same spot in the engine compartment. If you aren't getting enough water flow it will sound as you describe. Another thing, when I bought my boat in 2005 it had only 11 hours on the genny and the carburetor had to be replaced (at Marine Max expense). The mechanic who changed it out put the FA in backwards and it wasn't getting enough air. The exhaust was loud then too until I got it fixed. Have you checked your water pump and impeller and your strainer?

Wow, ok...maybe that is the case. No I haven't checked any of those things. Is it possible to do so with the boat in the water? I don't have a truck big enough to pull it out, so that's a little bit of an issue with things like this. My speedo line doesn't seem to be connected either so things may be adding up.

Can you explain how to check such things, or advise what part of the manual if any does say? Thanks.

You can do it with the boat in the water, just be sure to close the seacock first!

The pump is on the back of the genny, you will see the two hoses going to and from it. It's pretty easy to get to and get off to check. The sound coming out of the exhaust should be like a wet sounding gurgle. Inside the boat is just a slight hum, hardly distinguishable.

Also, the strainer is in the feed hose leading to the pump.

If you can run it and it doesn't shutdown then it sounds like it's getting enough to cool at least.

Mine was installed at purchase by the dealer. Technically aftermarket. It was installed "per Sea Ray spec". It is mounted on the centerline.

Here is a picture, standing in the aft starboard engine room, looking forward at the genny.

@ChuckW - the 2001 260 has the generator on the starboard side. As tight as yours is though...one should fit in mine.

@ultratiger - I might just have a look. Its curious to me because the generator was serviced the day before I bought it last month, so there shouldn't be anything wrong with it. However - it is far, far louder than a purr. Like a lawnmower.

Thanks for all of the advice guys!

The one issue with side mounted genny aftermarket is you will disrupt the list of the boat. You may need to move batteries or something else to counter the weight shift, if that wasn't done already.
