Heard there was a near catastrophe at this beach on long island yesterday saturday THE 28TH...

Main anchored boat broke loose of the off the hook, came loose with other tied up boats and boats were drifting near the rocks un-tied, and un -manned, panic erupted, and occupants were on the beach with a big barbque not knowing what was happening, young boy almost sucked into props on one boat, saved by another boater, A REAL NIGHTMARE OUT THERE:smt009

Any one from the south shore N.Y, heard about it????

Way too many boats for a single anchor... Not too mention that the whole aftermath could have probably been avoided with a few minutes of pre-planning and cooler heads. Live and learn.

That was the craziest thing I have seen in all my years boating. Unbelievable. I would love to see the damage up close. You could hear the crunching.

Was there really only one boat with their anchor out???

Amazing that no one was hurt.

I saw something similar at Aquapalooza in Boston this year. The tide was cominig in, the winds were picking up, and a 6 boat raft up starting coming straight toward us. Luckily they were all on their boats. They got within 20' of us and were yelling at me to move. I think the center boat started and motored the group up until they all untied.

I’m always afraid of rafting....but.... shouldn’t only the largest boat drop its anchor??
If something goes wrong than all the ropes/chains would tangle with catastrophic results...

That, my friends, is precisely why I do not raft. Not now, not ever.

Scott, once again we agree on a position not taken by most. This was a complete cluster ***k!

You guys should never drive again....you might have an accident.

How many hundreds of thousands of boats rafted this summer without incident? You guys are missing out on a great time, when done correctly.

There will be hundreds of thousands less 2 thank you very much.

Several Searay's on the video. Any CSR members in that Charlie Foxtrot? Glad no one was injured.

I don't either...and I'm not as good at gelcoat repair as Scott is....we took the same B & E class

I wonder how the guy came out that used his leg for a fender...that don't buff out!

The driving analogy is not quite right, (good try though) as I don't intentionally place my car in a hazardous situation. A better analogy would be parking at Walmart.

The problem I have with rafting is that you are only as protected as the weakest link, or wingnut. Someone could easily do something stupid that would cause damage to your vessel. It's a risk I prefer not to take. I get plenty of enjoyment anchoring near my friends and chatting whilst in the water, as we admire our boats shining, gel coat damage free, contently with adult beverage in hand.

I feel alot safer rafting with 3 or 4 of my friends (who I trust) in a protected anchorage than I do with a bunch of wingnuts in close proximity doing 70 MPH on the highway. One wrong move from that inexperienced 16 YO or that 90 YO and you're in trouble.

I couldn't imagine not rafting up but to each his own. I just know we only do so with our close friends. We each know each other on and off the water. We know that we are all skilled, considerate and mindful of what's going. We have our anchor Nazi looking out for us as well. That's why I don't raft with people I don't know. I cringe everytime someone looks to join us. We have gotten pretty militant about just waving them off. I want to know what I can expect if a problem arises. You only get that with people you really know. I'd be more concerned about someone getting hurt or something happening to the kids with people around us who I don't know much more so than my gelcoat.

Rafting with people you don't know is just asking for trouble. In Oak Bluffs, the Harbor Master has you raft up with as many as 3 other boats on a mooring. It's fun sitting on the bow of my boat in my slip watching how boaters raft themselves up with other vacant boats. I wouldn't want to be one of those vacant boats. It is like bumper cars, except you get to climb on the other cars after you bump them.

This incident is the reason why MM surfside3 refused to host aquapalooza this year too many close calls last year. I dont blame them after viewing the video however they're raft ups are put together by pro's , I enjoy rafting up and meeting new people but it does make you think!!
