Soot around turbo

I have a lot of soot under the heat shield for my port turbo. There is no loss of boost or performance issues that I can detect at the helm or on the gauges. I'm guessing a waste gate issue. Has anyone experienced this on the Cummins turbos? I discovered the starboard side turbo is not original to the engine, but the port turbo is. Something with the 2005 QSC turbos that was fixed in later years?

Ah yes....I have the same brownish soot at the turbo heat shields on both my QSC 8.3's

I'm going to have the waste gate resealed.

Addendum: Scratch that. It is not serviceable. I'm going to love with a little soot and save $3,000.

JV II, looking through my boat history mine were adjusted in 2012. I noticed black soot after purchasing in August and had Cummins adjust them again when the hauled the engines. Not sure if it's right but I still get some black soot near the boot.

I noticed some on my port the other day. I assumed it was the joint from the turbo to the exhaust but haven't looked closely. Will be interested to see what you figure out.

Paul, how would you compare the 48DA to the Princess?

They're both nice boats but as the original retail prices suggest, the Princess is a step up.

Access for carrying out maintenance was better throughout on the Princess and the cabinetry was all solid timber as opposed to veneer. Having said that the teak floor in the bathrooms was a pain to keep clean so I much prefer the moulded fibreglass from a usability point of view.

Probably the part I miss most is how the Princess felt at cruising speed. With straight shafts it was a very flat and quiet ride without any of the bow lift like the Sea Ray. Most of the skippers I've spoken to rate the v58s very highly for cruising so I'm not sure if all Princess models do it as well.

Unfortunately for me the Princess was my dad's boat and he virtually never used it so decided to sell. I'll hopefully get into a Princess one day (the v72s look nice!) but now I'm happy with the 48 and not having to think about the MAN service bills!

If the turbo seals are good then wastegate is the issue. How much leak that is allowable is a question for the engine manufacturer. If the wastegate is leaking then you may be losing boost PSI which equates to power lose.

My port (sooty) boost pressure at 2250 RPM is 28.7. The starboard is 29.0. If I run it up or down 100 RPM boost is still is about 0.3 less on the port side. Load and gear oil temperature is fractionally higher on the port engine. Maybe that's the one running reverse.

If I remember correctly at 2250rpm my Port side is running 26/27psi & Starboard closer to 29psi. Both engines were only a percent or two different when looking at their engine load though so I figured the psi difference could be the sensor. I'll pull the heat cover off the turbo this weekend and try to identify where any soot may be coming from. Hopefully nothing too serious.

Saw this thread and had the same issue on our motor survey. I had my local cummins Rep do the survey and it is the waste gate leaking through the adjusting rod boot. He advised the only way to repair is replace the Turbo. He said it is very common and there is no harm or performance loss, more of an annoying soot issue. He told me to watch it and advised not to replace at this time. Hope this helps.

This is exactly the same advice I got from my mechanic/Cummins tech. I got a quote of $3,000 to replace the turbo. I said why, what could happen? He said probably nothing, to watch it. Worst case was a fire. Least case, a dirty engine room. I cleaned up the soot and ran it for about an hour. No additional noticeable soot. I think the soot I saw was the result of hundreds of hours of use.

Thank you for the info. I've been meaning to look at mine closer. There's only been a little bit of soot on the port engine so I'll just clean it and keep an eye on it.
