Soooooo...

As much as I hate to think about it, I am hoping to get into the middle of October before the water tempature gets to cold for the kiddies to swim in (my daughter already wants a wet suit for kneeboarding). I would like to take some trips up and down the Ohio River once the leaves start to change, if I can make that long. As this is my first boat I have owned, how cold can it get before I need to worry about winterizing? For example we have been known to have some cold nights in Oct, 30 degrees, but the temp tends to be all over the place, some years are hot some are cold?

Well...as long as the water doesn't freeze...for the most part your ok to a point. Once the water gets to 40 or so on a constant basis....start thinking about putting it up till spring.

Hoping for some nice weather like last year when it hit 90 the first weekend of October, but usually we get hauled after the 15th of October when the marina "closes". Winterize around the end of October, depending on the temp and weather.

I'm not trying to rub this in....really. Here in Northern California we leave the boats in year 'round. I can't remember the last time it was below freezing and I don't think the Sacramento area has had snow in 50 years. We will boat most of the year. We will need to turn on the heater at night but we're there.

I truly feel for those of you that can't boat the whole year. That would make me crazy.

The swimming will stop by the end of this month most likely :smt089and that reduces the amount of time we spend on the boat. My 7 & 3 year olds get bored quick when they can't swim. We'll be out year round just no extended stays on the boat.

Funny..I can't imagine how nice it would be not to have to take it off the lake and put it away till late spring....Someday....

This weekend might be my last, not totally sure yet. I have some work I want to do but need to have the boat out of the water to do it, and don't want to wait too long and be out there freezing my you know what off. It'll also give me plenty of time to figure out the whole winterizing process. I've got manuals up the wazoo on how to do it but I'm not the most mechanically inclined person. I'm sure I'll figure it out though! (I hope, anyway)

The River Gods (I'm not really sure who's actually in control of it) open up some giant gates at Champlain Lock 1 to control the water level between 1 and 2 over the winter, and my marina, as well as much of the river between the two locks, is actually empty of water over the winter and into early spring. I just got my winter storage contract, I think it says we ultimately have until October 15th but I'd have to double check.

My brother has been up on Lake George for a few years now, I think last year he pulled his boat sometime in November. I'd like to get mine up there but can't swallow the slip rates... maybe when I move up to a boat I can sleep comfortably on I will, at least then I can justify it as a "waterfront vacation property"

Looks like this weekend will be it. Going to a halloween party by boat on Saturday..In the rain it looks like.
The dealer is whining about having to do the winterization when it's so cold out. So I guess I'll let them pull it next week.
It's gonna be a looooonnnnngggg winter...:smt089

Man....you guys are really making me feel bad. supposed to be 86 Saturday and Sunday and we will be on the boat all weekend.

However, I will get a dose of your reality on Monday and Tuesday when I have to go the Chicago for biz. The weather says 49. Yuk. Now I have to find my coat.
