Something stuck in the riser??

Greetings,

Upon closer inspection of my engine tonight and reaching behind the riser, on the port side there seems to be a metal plug, but on the oposite side, sticking out in is what appears to be a hand made plug ... feels kinda like that expandable foam in a can. Why would someone do this?

Can you be a little more specific on the exact location of the metal plug. The merc link you used in your "water open, closed" post was helpful.

Without doing a direct comparison and what I remember, it looks like part number 15/16 on the diagram. http://www.mercruiserparts.com/Show...LD+AND+S.+STEEL+EXH+ELBOW+(5.7L/5.7LX+BRAVO`)

I thought one might be a metal plug, but I could be hard rubber, the on the other side of the engine, the material is definitely like the expandable foam products. I wonder what the original owner was thinking!
