Went out to my boat Saturday morning to clean it and found 5 empty holes when I removed the cover. The only two speakers they didn't take was the ones on the arch(in plain view). Everything under the cover gone. 4 speakers and the sub-woofer.

Any wisdom on whether or not to make an insurance claim? $250 deductible and $1200 worth of speakers gone.

I reinstalled the old factory polk speakers. The JL Audio speakers were a huge improvement sound-wise.

For a $950 difference, make the claim. It's why you have insurance.

FWIW, it was a targeted hit. Make the marina aware of it. Make your dock mates aware of it.

I'm sure there are a hundred "marina is not responsible for" clauses in your contract, however it is in the marina's best interest to secure the facility to the best of it's ability.

Oh gosh, so sorry to hear that. It really sucks because I'm sure you are now skeptical about putting good replacements back in just in case it happens again. I think a claim may be in order but really depends on what it's going to do to your future premiums. Don't they have security or cameras where you keep your boat at all? Would be nice to catch who did it!

I probably wouldn't make a claim for less than $1000 net. However, if that is the route you go I would take a hard look at your deductible as you are probably paying too much for your insurance.

Spoke to my insurance guy. He said that you never know how the underwriting department will treat the claim as far as future premiums. In other words the claim may or may not affect the premium. I think we are going to order new speakers and move forward. Guess it's time to get online and start shopping. Anyone know where the deals on JL Audio speakers are?

I'd be setting up my own surveillance camera's an paying VERY close attention who I allow on and around my boat. That sucks for sure....at my marina we have gates that are locked after the gas dock closes....what's your set up like?

This stinks! Be careful here in NY they would steal your old car battery and when your replaced it with a new one they'd come back and steal the new one! If your marina has wifi get a camera !!

we recently brought back a fairly nice cement pelican and a two foot section of piling from our vacation at a NC beach....we thought it would look good at our boat dock....so we put the piling at the step from the dock to our swim platform and put the pelican on top....we ran out of time so we did not get a chance to secure the piling nor the pelican....we were not able to go to the boat for a couple weeks...when we got there the pelican was gone and the piling had been moved...my dock neighbors said they noticed it missing but just thought we had put it in the cabin for safe keeping....we don't have a real problem with theft on the dock so we don't know what happened to the pelican...

i have bought this security camera and plan to install it soon hanging down from the center of the radar arch.......

i hate a theif....if someone is in need and ask me for something i will be glad to give it to them....just don't steal from me....that makes me VERY angry....

Bet the pelican is at the bottom of the lake under your dock. Whether accidental or malicious I'd guess it got knocked over.

you could be right Steve....we thought of that too....

we get fisherman at our dock at all hours of the night...they will fish close to the dock and if a slip is open they will sometimes pull into the slip and fish....we are wondering if a fisherman maybe got the pelican in the wee hours of the morning when no one would notice....

Sorry to hear that Cliff, that sucks too. Is nothing sacred anymore.

Even with locked gates/security codes, people can visit by boat, take what they want, and leave as silently as they arrived. Nosy neighbors are the next best thing to cameras, for sure, except that they do have to sleep sometimes!

We have coded gates, but friends lost a portable generator--the thieves cut the chain that locked it to his bow. (Oh, wait....maybe it was just the CSR Safety Patrol on a routine portable genny cleanup run?)

Sorry 'bout the speakers AND the pelican, guys--that bites!

Sorry to hear about your speakers (and the bird). Sounds pretty sneaky of them to only take the ones below the cover. Careful replacing them as I bet they will be back for the new ones + the ones on the arch, it's a common M.O. Cameras are great if you want a nice HD photo of the thief jacking your speakers but sometimes ineffective on stopping the crime from recurring. Maybe look into some of those security screws that take a special driver to remove. Thieves hate to work hard and they might just move on. At the very least try using the smallest robertson head screw you can. That'll mess with their heads. Good luck!

The thief might just save a life or two...

LOL

I second the security screw idea. They would have to pry the speakers out which would probably ruin them. There is a slight chance they might pry them out and damage the boat in the process, but the smart thief would just move on to the next boat.

We have coded gates and security cameras on all docks. Hopefully this is a big deterrent to anyone getting itchy fingers. We have several live aboards right near my boat as well and that helps.

I have security screws on my speakers. They can really only slow down a determined thief, but as you said, the idea is to encourage them to move on or slow them down long enough to be noticed by a neighbor or camera.
