Yesterday when I took it out the ignition stuck in the run position.

The switch itself didn't stick but something in the electrical system is keeping the ignition on.

When I got home I replaced the key switch thinking it was bad but it is still doing the very same thing with the new key switch installed.

In order to shut off the engine I have to disconnect the battery.

I've looked through my service manual but I cant see anything in the system other then the key switch that would control the ignition flow.

If you have any idea what I should check please let me know.

UPDATE: I just completely removed the key switch and unhooked all three wires to it and the ignition is still on..... I'm baffled!

UPDATE: I found the problem. There is a two wire connection on the back of the alternator that had worn the insulation off and began touching. While touching the ignition would be on. I removed the damaged wire and made the repairs. All ok now!

This post can be erased if needed thank you.

Thank you
Jesse

Generally speaking, you do not want to disconnect the battery when the engine is running. The voltage generated by the alternator can spike without the load of the battery to smooth things out. This can result in blown alternator rectifiers, voltage regulator, and any other electronics that might be powered on.

Glad you fixed the problem.

Best regards,
Frank

I know, you are 100% correct  but when your sitting at the ramp with the trailer in front of you and you can't get it to shut off, you gotta do what you have to do to be able to pull her out of the water.

It wasn't my perferred choice but the only one I could come up with in a short amount of time. I had three others waiting their turn to load up. And they actually knew what they were doing lol

But back to your suggestion, thank you, you are correct.
I am hoping to not have to do that again.
